At the height of ecstacy use in the UK in the 90's they estimated 3 million pills were being dropped over a weekend, they had, in total about 8 deaths a year, due to to heatstroke/dehydration, even these tailed off once people realised what the signs and treatment was.
Ecstacy is about as harmless as benzidrene or ritalin and we hand out these to 5 year olds like candy.

Why is it even illegal? It sure isn't a behavioural issue. If you ever been around people under the influence of ecstasy, you would certainly say they are non-violent. Whereas could you say the same about alcohol? The video posted by icecube hit it bang on. It is society telling you it's bad for your health, ... why is tobacco not illegal? alcohol?

Simply it comes down to money. There is too much money to stop it. Alcohol and tabacco companies would back up a truck to whoevers house they needed to making sure it stayed legal. And outside lobby groups for correction and police officers they are the biggest supporters of keeping even the most harmless drugs like marijuana illegal. Politics baby, it's what's best for the interest of their wallets, not the people.

Don't forget private prisons. There is way too much money behind locking up a large number of people. From police budgets to prisons.

Actually alcohol companies are also huge supporters of keeping drugs but specifically marijuana illegal. Obviously don't want to have any competition, and pot has been proven to be good for recovering alcoholics.

Re: He cites studies that say consumption of ecstasy by adults in its pure form and in controlled doses is relatively safe and non-addictive.

By those standards wouldnt lsd, psilocybin, and mescalin qualify for decriminalization?

Sounds good to me

I get that ecstasy has few physical side effects but what about psychological effects? I have known mdma to cause pretty bad depression in the days or weeks following a dose. Especially for those who have suffered from depression in the past. I cannot support decriminalisation until I see more information on induced depression

Is the side effect of depression something you have personally witnessed or is this something you have found from a source? How does this drug differentiate from many other legal prescribed drugs and their numerous side effects which include depression?

A big difference is that ritalin has a therapeutic benefit. And it's not given out "like candy"

Wikipedia:
"Many studies, particularly in the fields of psychology and cognitive therapy, have suggested that MDMA has therapeutic benefits and facilitates therapy sessions in certain individuals, a practice for which it had formally been used in the past. Clinical trials are now testing the therapeutic potential of MDMA for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety associated with terminal cancer."

We aren't talking about using MDMA for therapy is what I meant. I am aware of this research, though to my knowledge it had not proven more useful than what we have already

It is something that I have personally witnessed in several people. It could be that those cases were anomalous but I would expect a scientific study would find something similar.

Personally, I find it hard to sympathize with dumb #### recreational drug users that endanger their own lives by popping potentially tainted and dangerous drugs. I don't really care if someone does it, so long as it doesn't endanger others, and I'm not particularly invested in the debate one way or another, but the idea that I should be worried about the health of someone that buys pills off of some shady guy on the street, when they are not addicted in any way whatsoever and are doing this purely for the fun of it, doesn't jive with me. Just like I'd curse someone's stupidity for trying to walk along the railing on the balcony of a high-rise, I'd do the same for someone taking drugs from an unknown source with unknown consequences.

I am sure there are better arguments for its legalization than that some people are just idiots.

Every person who is addicted to anything bought it the first time just for the fun of it too. Probably the second, third and fourth time too

working as a youth worker I can say catagorically it is handed out by md's with little supervision at the behest of any parent that asks.
The kids at my school learnt to grind it down and snort it to get a buzz and still the doctors were handing it out, I doubt 1/10th of the 29 million prescriptions per annum writen for ritalin in the US were valid.
