Who knows, but rest assured they'll actually work properly without tinkering.

Because they had two+ years to copy the design and make minor changes right?

So I am in the market for a new laptop after my last Macbook Pro (2009) died due to liquid damage. Any opinions on the 2011 Macbook Pro and Air? The 13" models for the pro and the air are being sold as refurbished units, and cost about $280 less then the 2012 Pro. It would mostly be used for school stuff and maybe a little gaming (Starcraft 2?)
The pros and cons so far for each are:
MBA
+ Portability
+ Higher res screen
+ Have an external drive so storage is not an issue (atleast I don't think so)
- Small storage (128gb SSD)
MBP
+ More storage space
+ I have 8gb ram from my old MBP which would fit in the 2011 MBP
I am also open to getting a windows laptop. Any advice would be appreciated!

I went from a 15" 2010 mbp -> 2011mba and love the switch. I do programming / photoshop and it handles them all well for my needs (granted not doing anything too intensive). I'm not a gamer, so I can't help you out there, but I also run a windows 7 vm via parallels and it handles that no problem, its nice to just be able to swipe inbetween two OS's.
I'll probably upgrade the sdd to 240gb here in the near future, doubles the speed etc of the factory one, so that should provide a good performance boost too. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Aura_Pro_Express

Is this the word on the street, or just your opinion? Trying to decide if I should keep holding off or upgrade now.

Word is there's nothing coming for desktops until next year.

Apple PR confirmed Mac Pro next year but no comment on iMac...according to macrumors. I still think iMac will get a spec and launch update alongside mountain lion

Anyone wanna run down any neat new features on iOS, or any taken from Android that are updated and improved?
I skipped through the presentation yesterday evening and the QRcode library thing was pretty interested and neat I though.

I'm in the same boat, I've used the voice on my Android (nexus s) to make calls and send txts before, but it's been limited. The Apple Siri commercials with celebrities have been their worst IMO.

I'm canceling my order. I still have too many questions to plunk down over $3000 on a computer. And knowing I'll likely never be able to upgrade the RAM is the final straw.

Im still gonna get it! Don't mind the non-upgradable ram part, i'll just order it with the amount of RAM I want. I expected nothing to be user-replacable like the Air when I saw the custom components part of the presentation.

I'll probably get one eventually. I just want to make sure it's worth the investment, especially if I have to pay a premium for extra RAM.

$200 for an extra 8 GB of RAM is hardly a huge premium, and at that point you're rocking 16 GB.
Folks are vastly overreacting to the lack of upgradability. Seriously, what in the next 3-4 years, is going to require significantly more RAM than we have now? If you think having 16GB is important, get it now, and realize that amortized over 4 years, that extra $200 cost you a whopping $4 per month..oh noes.
How about all those non-socketed chips on every single laptop motherboard out there? How come iFixit isn't up in arms about the fact that a single chip failure on any modern laptop means a hugely expensive motherboard replacement, including the soldered in CPU.
Seems like a non-story, from a company (iFixit) that is in the business of selling tools and parts to take these machines apart.

I like IFixIt, but yes, it is highly in their best interest that people don't buy these new apple machines with non-replacable parts as that is where they drive all their business from.

I also like how they neglect to mention why those chips are soldered in - besides the mechanical space savings, there are significant power savings at hand - removable RAM needs highed voltages and current to overcome noise and signal degradation, plus larger/more support chips to handle buffering and switching requirements inherent with longer signal traces.
It's not a (entirely) devious attempt by Apple to reduce upgradability - it improves performance, power consumption, as well as mechanical reliability.
