I don't think it was ever reasonable to expect an iPhone 5. With them being released in the fall now it doesn't make sense to announce it this early. Apple generally announces things either on launch day or a few weeks prior. Also, an iPhone is way too big to have an event with other stuff. An iPhone gets its own event for sure.
I thought the event was very impressive. The iOS 6 stuff is fantastic.

A 15.4" laptop with a resolution of 2880x1800. 220 pixels per inch... we're starting to rival print quality in a digital display... oh and they made it thinner to boot.
I'd say we're within a decade of true "interactive paper", and this is one of the important steps along the way. What is "earth-shattering" in your world? If Zombie Jobs™ had risen from the grave to deliver the iPhone 7?
A retina display in a laptop is indeed earth-shattering, it will provide the first opportunity for content producers (those guys making all your fun apps) to work in a true native resolution instead of scaling up/down and tweaking along the way.
If it were in the budget right now I'd order a retina macbook in a heart beat.

According to user comments at macrumors (consider the source), it's barely an upgrade. It's just a slight speed bump to the CPU(s); they didn't add Thunderbolt support or even update the GPU to a model newer than 2010 (Radeon 5770).

Yeah, I'm actually just noticing that. I started going through the customization options, and there's really not a lot of awesomeness there. New Xeon processors and a larger amount of standard RAM. 5770 Radeon is pretty harsh.
I went into this event looking for a desktop. It was either going to be an iMac or a Mac Pro (whichever got the better updates). They didn't touch the iMac at all, and the Mac Pro updates are pretty wonky... yeesh. That sucks.

I heard in the fall, likely just in time for the iPhone 5.

Any idea how long it normally takes for the Apple store to open after a presentation?

Unimpressed with iOS6 update. I am looking forward to the official Google Maps app, now that iOS6 uses Apple's own mapping software.

Some good features, but why on earth on the 6th version can you not put info on the Lock screen!?! You know, like a forecast, or email summary..
And they wonder why we jailbreak. Still no SBSettings comparable either...
Whatever, keeps Cydia running.

Agree - For the first time since I first got on board the iPhone wagon, I'm seriously considering looking elsewhere. The only problem is I haven't felt, in my limited use of other phones, that they are as polished as iOS in a useability fashion. I'm hoping that by the time I'm up for hardware renewal in October, someone has built a kick butt Windows phone I can move over to.
