Goldwater Institute raises concerns over latest attempt to sell Coyotes

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sport...rticle4239515/

The letter raises questions over actual cost minus capital expense, parking rights and the city’s decision to adopt the deal “as an emergency measure, which would deprive Glendale citizens of their right to refer the matter to a vote.”

In its letter, the Goldwater Institute does not threaten any legal action. Instead, there are directions as to what council should do.

“We hope that these inquiries will assist the Council in its deliberations over the proposed deal. We further urge you to not to rush to a vote,” states the letter. “The terms of the 100-page proposal were released to the public for the first time on Monday, and not all the exhibits and associated documents have been released yet. There should be an adequate public comment period …”

My Turn: Coyotes essential for Westgate expansion

By Councilwoman Joyce Clark

http://www.azcentral.com/members/Blo...yVoices/163312

Allowing the team to leave will hurt Glendale financially. The debt on arena bond construction and its operating and management costs still must be paid. The Coyotes pay monthly rent. A surcharge on every arena event ticket sold goes to Glendale. The team generates revenue for 42 games and more when there are playoff games. Hotels and restaurants are full. If the team leaves, there will be fewer nights when Westgate will produce substantial revenue for the city.

Now there is Greg Jamison as a potential owner. The Jamison Group will benefit Glendale in the long term. Jamison has a proven track record. He turned the NHL San Jose Sharks into a successful and profitable team. He made the San Jose arena a popular and paying venue. He invested in the community of San Jose. What he did in San Jose he can do in Glendale.

Westgate, with the Coyotes, the Cardinals and Cabela’s, is poised to explode with development. A majority of the zoning in and around Westgate has been approved. Glendale will host the Super Bowl in 2015. This synergy is destined to put Westgate on track to become Glendale’s second economic powerhouse.

God I hope this falls through.

That city does not deserve a team.

So far, people are only talking about NFL and MLB, which maybe says all you need to know about the NHL in Phoenix on the eve of a very important day in franchise history.

The idea that any city "deserves" a sports team is ridiculous

Why? If that city has a great fanbase that shows constant support for a sports team how do they not deserve to have it?

That's the point. What do you think the #1 topic on Quebec City sports radio is today?

Making sure all the Nordiques coaching staff and management speak french, lest they be labelled dirty, culture destoying satanists?

I would really like to see this situation finally resolved (and really appreciate all the links etc. from troutman), but why do I think we're not even in the homestretch yet?

I laughed at the "restaurants and hotels are full" line. I was at two establishments literally within sight of the arena right after their game 2 home win against Nashville. Not only was there nothing to indicate a hockey game had taken place only minutes before, but you could've shot a cannon through the place and not hit anyone.

In what world could it possibly end up with them leaving tomorrow? The four council members would vote for the Coyotes deal until the end of time.
