This game isn't for everyone, same as Diablo 2. If you enjoy the feeling of slaughtering dozens of enemies at a time though, it should be right up your alley. Good story, good gameplay, and the ever-present carrot of gear upgrades to keep you moving along. That's Diablo in a nutshell.
The reason I can do the game 4 times over with one character is because the difficulty progression is significant enough that it feels like a totally different playthrough on Nightmare over Normal, for example.

Ditto here! I've been so slow at work the last month. No work for me here or anywhere across the country. Instead of being sad and worried that I might get laid off, I think "Yes! I can go home early everyday and play Diablo!" On top of that, tonight my gf is going with her friends to visit a friend's newborn baby girl. So I'm looking really forward to bailing out of work shortly to go pl my witch doctor straight through past dinner and towards bed time lol.

I got my wisdom teeth out this morning and I was just hoping I felt good enough to sit at the computer and play D3 for the next couple of days since I don't have to work.

Something interesting I figured out by accident.
Apparently Diablo will play with RDP video drivers, although obviously very slow. While this normally wouldn't be very useful for a game, it does allow for you to use the auction house while not at home (assuming you have a set up that allows it, both at home and at work.
I really appreciate being able to do some searching on the AH during my lunch break etc, since I doubt they will ever make a stand alone app/web interface for it.

Thats pretty sweet, I just bring my laptop and aircard to work for this. I wouldn't doubt they bring out a stand alone app its already out for WoW and works awesome.

Lol sometimes it's worth trolling the AH, I just picked up a 120dps legendary sword (level 43 I think, my level) for 3500 gold. I think someone forgot a few zeroes.

I sell anything under 500dps for 5k assuming it is a decent weapon for its level.
Over half of them don't sell in 2 days and go to vendor.

I think the RMAH part of the equation will seriously hamper any stand alone apps, but hopefully I am wrong. I can see it already though, people with macros set up to buy items and resell for a 25 cent profit.
Assuming the 10 item limit will stand on the RMAH it shouldn't be too bad, but if you leverage accounts like gold sellers have it could really impact things.

So farming the camping spots for liquid rainbow, does it matter what difficulty you have it set at, I'm just doing Hell so I can breeze through it faster.
Also just logging out and in is enough correct?

Doesn't matter for most pieces, and I know I got the rainbow in the normal course of play on normal. My farming of the stuff from the frozen cave was also normal.

Do stats for items you give to followers affect you? I.e. if it says 10% increased magic or 10% increased gold does that impact you?

You get a certain % of that value, I think maybe 20%?
edit: just to clarify, I only thing the gold find and magic find work this way, I have not noticed any other stat impacted y my followers gear.

You have to go to the last part of act 4 in each nightmare and hell to get the staff upgrades from the smithy.
