I used to preorder a lot of JRPGs from EB games back in the PS1 days. They usually come with cool free stuff (like a clock for Chrono Cross, or a sock puppet for Lunar: Eternal Blue). The free stuff was awesome when I was a kid. Now that I'm older, I don't preorder since the free stuff doesn't really interest me anymore.
Also when I was a kid, psychologically parting with $60 in one shot was kind of painful, but splitting it into $30 for the deposit and then $30 when I actually pick up the game a few months later seemed better.
I stopped pre-ordering games when I had a game pre-ordered from EB games and it came a full week after the release date. They had copies of the game there, just not the pre-order copies. I still don't understand what the hell they were talking about there.
Also, I usually wait a week or two. Dead Island dropped to $40 in week two of it's release and lots of games that don't have the initial sales numbers do as well. If it's a game that I know won't drop (NHL, COD, GTA, etc.) then it's a different story though.
Awful music in a lot of games and demos shown. The whole genre of fake orchestras and fake operatic singers chanting fake epicness to explosions has to stop. It's the Nickelback of videogame and movie trailers.

It's better than it being an actual orchestra performance and people bloody clapping during it.
And that ended up being Twilight Princess, probably the worst Zelda game (along with Wind Waker) and the last one I bothered with. I don't miss the overhyped undelivered promises of E3. If things were underwhelming this year, there's a chance the lowered expectations might be met.

Have you played Skyward Sword? In my opinion, Skyward Sword was not made well, but it's playable, as I found Twilight Princess to be unplayable. I got a Wii and Twilight Princess when they came out, I got halfway through Twilight Princess and quit. Back in January I bought a new Wii (sold mine back in 2009), along with Skyward Sword, later re-buying Twilight Princess. Again, I quit at almost the exact spot.
Skyward Sword is actually abysmal in regards to it's actual content. Three prototypical areas (that are small), re-used dungeons, etc., etc. If I could sum up the content of SS it'd be "recycled." That said, it was at the very least playable, unlike Twilight Princess. Skyward Sword came off as a "Look what we did with the controller!"
I never did play Wind Waker, for some reason. I don't even know why.
Why do people pre-order? I've never done and don't understand why you would. Is it cheaper?
If you do it at this time of year during E3, yes quite a bit cheaper. Roughly $10-20 bucks cheaper on a $60 game right now. Some cases, $15 on a $50 game. Last day for the sale I believe.
Same as last year, I was pretty much set for the rest of the year after their E3 sales. Just sit and relax, free shipping, no charge until it ships, etc. (For me, the best part is the savings in time just to have it sent to me.)
That being said, these orders often don't include steelbooks/promo stuff they might add as the release date gets closer. Though if you are patient, you can wait a few months/a year later and you can probably get the same or cheaper prices.
Seems like a lot of games on demo at E3 were actually run on PCs with Xbox controllers paired with them. The source will obvious be non-partisan but I always find the behind the scenes stuff interesting and I don't have any trouble believing this. If you watch the TV commercials for a lot of current console games, the resolution and framerate are jacked up way beyond how the actual system runs them.

Twitter seems to indicates the sales above are extended a few more days.
