Jolly Ol' England against diminutive Belgium.

No Kompany, thats a surprise. Probably needs rest after a long season and no sense playing in a meaningless game.

This is a pretty strong England squad. That doesnt speak to their motivation mind you, it is still a meaningless game a week before the big show.

I'm looking forward to seeing what the Ox and Sturridge can do today.

This is wholly unconvincing stuff from England. If they play like this at the tournament France and Sweden will tear them apart.

Wesley Sneider on why Euro is more difficult than the WC. I don't disagree, nor do I think his comments are unwarrented. I just found it kinda funny.

Quote:
'It will be very difficult, because for me, the Euros is more difficult than the World Cup because you don't have the teams from Africa or wherever when you know you are going to take three points,' said Manchester City and Man United target Sneijder.

Portugal looked as good going forward as they have in a long time but an absolute putrid and embarrassing display at the back. Disgusting.

Cahill broke his jaw yesterday and will subsequently miss the tournament. His replacement will be Martin Kelly.

So six Liverpool players now ... very deserving after their fantastic season. Hard to cheer for this team, Hodgson is out of his mind.

English players are mediocre. Deal with it.

Martin Kelly is no Gary Cahill, but hes an able sub.

I know there are injuries and possible other issues (Carrick) keeping guys out but there is no way Johnson, Henderson, Downing or Kelly should be anywhere near the English team and Gerrard and Carroll are stretches as well.

England may have some mediocre players but they aren't that bad.

This is nuts

why not finally call up Micah Richards so you actually have a decent RB, what is Hodgson's love affair with Liverpool

Hodgson said that Rio was left out for "footballing reasons" as well, there's no argument to be made that right now Kelly is better than Rio

If Terry's scan goes bad today I would guess there's a 99% chance he calls up Carragher

Supposedly Micah Richards and Carrick both said no when asked about being on the subs list.

Whatever you say.....

Yesterday a team comprised of:

3 City players
2 Chelsea players
2 United players
2 Liverpool players
1 Spurs player
1 Arsenal player

And they got bossed by Belgium. Possession was 60/40 and they only had one shot on goal.

Yeah....thats Liverpool's fault.

Who said it was Liverpool's fault?

And bossed is a fairly strong word. Neither team looked particularly good. good for Belgium for having that possession to bad they did sweet f all with it.

nobody blames the Liverpool players for a poor outing one week ahead of the tournament. I simply blame Hodgson for selecting some Liverpool players for no obvious reason (other than the fact that he briefly coached Liverpool two years ago). Given the season they had, Henderson and especially Downing should be nowhere near the national team. I am just pissed that some players are constantly overlooked. Why not try someone like Nathan Dyer or Scott Sinclair from Swansea who were a lot better last season than Downing and Carroll? What about Rodwell? What about Sturridge or even Jarvis? And this does not even include players who were obviously left out because of other reasons (Richards, Ferdinand, Carrick, Cleverley).

To be exact ......
“We were advised a few months ago that because of where he was in his career, that he wanted to step back from being called up and sitting on the subs bench. He will help in extreme situations,” confirmed the FA’s Adrian Bevington.
http://euro2012.youwin.com/en/fa-exp...2012-omission/

The question has to be asked though that isn't calling up Jordan freakin Henderson representative of as extreme a situation as you can possibly have?

It's because it makes perfect sense to replace an injured centre-back with a right back.

Hodgson starting to take heat already and the tournament hasn't even started.

Not good when even Lineker is calling you out.

Quote:
Yet the manager insisted only form was an issue - and pointed to the fact that he had also omitted Micah Richards of champions Manchester City. But last night Lineker, who will front England's Euro 2012 games on the BBC, Tweeted: "Richards only has himself to blame for refusing to be on standby. But @ rioferdy5 omission reasons now more obvious than ever."
Another former England striker, Ian Wright, said on Twitter: "If Rio is fit and still can't get into that squad, then I believe it must be for reasons other than football. Would love to know."
Former United hitman Andy Cole said he "wouldn't be surprised" if factors other than form were involved.
He said: "If there were footballing reasons for Rio not going I would love to know what they were.

Theres a very simple answer for that: reputation.

The idea that in their current form Henderson and Downing are 'internationals' is hysterical. But they have experience with the national team as does Kelly, even if only in U21.

I also agree that they probably shouldnt be there, they've been terrible lately, but sometimes a player with poor club form can still perform well for the national team. Its a situation Germany had with many players for a while. Granted, I dont think that applies here because I dont think any of them have been standouts for England either.

That being said, these are the guys that have been used in qualifying, right before a tournament with no chance to blood these guys the national team isnt going to be 'trying' anyone.
