That neighborhood is scary. I lived in an apartment on 14th Ave near 2nd St SW about 10 years ago. You could see just about every kind of deal going on down there. I am not sure why anybody would want to be there on purpose.

Things have gotten a lot better in the past 10 years, especially in the eastern half of the community. East of 4th Street.
Beltline has an average personal crime rate and slightly above average property crime rate.

Are you seriously suggesting that Calgary police don't conduct proper investigations in caees that involve bad people?

I'm just saying that you could sense something definitely out of the ordinary may have happened, judging from the # of Police cars, officers, and detectives that were combing the area. You just don't see that in a violent crime involving drugs, domestic violence, gangs, etc.
My guess is it's because the window of opportunity to catch the perpetrator is much shorter if it does turn out to be a random assault by a stranger, rather than someone the victim knew.

That's probably because the perpetrator isn't usually still at large (especially in cases of domestic violence), or that there is a delay in reporting the crime I would guess.

Was crime the reason the city closed down electric avenue?

lol wut? IMO by far the best area in the city to live as a late 20s single guy. Sooo many bars within stumbling home distance. If it wasn't for my work and hockey i wouldn't even need a vehicle.
Perhaps it was different when you were down here, but now there's a pretty heavy police presence, other then a couple drug deals I've seen go down in some cars, the only other problems have been pretty much what happens in every district which has a large number of drunk idiots in it at closing time.

The block on 14th ave between 4th and 2nd is still pretty sketch, but not nearly as bad as 5 years ago.
This was west of 4th, which is a safer area generally (not reallly unsafe at all)

It has improved since then. Probably the emergence of the number of businesses and the revitalization of the Central Memorial Park. They were just starting to build the IBM buildings when I left the neighborhood. Before that though, it was look outside the window for entertainment from the hookers, pimps, and johns.
I think its still sketchy, and I wouldn't live with my family there. There are still used needles being found all the time near the tennis courts by the chlidren's playground, according to our old daycare provider. I've also noticed some dubious-looking business going down after Flames games by "Awesome Pizza".

Two tough guys charged...
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...g-charged.html
Quote:
Two Calgary men in their 20s have been charged in connection with a brutal beating earlier this week.
Garrett Elliott Lee Smith, 26, and Jarod Donald Henry, 22, were arrested Friday and each face a charge of aggravated assault.
A man is still in life-threatening condition after being assaulted on Sixth Street at 15th Avenue S.W. on Wednesday night. Police believe the attack was unprovoked.

So, did the victim just say "It was the two biggest d-bag looking guys in Calgary", and that's all it took for those guys to get arrested?

Aggravated assault? Shouldn't they have been charged with attempted murder?

Smith's Facebook page didn't have much in terms of security settings on it. Looks like a winner.

They may have pummeled the victims face til it wasn't recognizable, but I predict that their anuses will be unrecognizable after the other convicts get done pummeling them.

Giving us Kelowna to Calgary transplants a bad name.
His current number of friends on Facebook is 172. Wonder what it will drop down to in the next few days. Perhaps a CP jihad could get it down to just him and his co-accused..

Look for a certain Garrett Smith with The Game as his profile pic.
I live in the area. It's hardly unsafe. And knowing where these losers habitate (ie not inner-city), pretty indicative that it's not an inner-city thing. Cops are around on foot on 17th now regularly, especially at night.
