Geocaching?

Have done some geocaching and really enjoyed it.

The urban stuff doesn't really appeal to me, but the rural/mountain locations tend to be A LOT of fun.

we did our first one as a family yesterday. It was a lot of fun kids enjoyed the hike and searching for the cache at the site.

Any free iphone apps to do this. I tried the trial version of the one from the Geocaching site but they want $10 for the full version. I can't see us doing it a ton but it is a fun little activity to do.

Look for an app called c:Geo. I have it on my Android phone, so I dunno if they have it for iPhone but I would assume they must. It's free and works great. Even better if you also get the free Radar app to help with zeroing in while using c:Geo.

I am thinking of doing this but I have a few questions.
Can you just use the same GPS that you use in your car or does it have to be a handheld type unit?
Also I am thinking of doing this with a group so can anyone recommend a place to rent some GPS's as we don't want to shell out a few hundred bucks for a GPS.

Not sure if it's worth bumping but I'm well and truly into this now. With the nice weather we had this weekend my family went out both days and really enjoyed ourselves. My 4.5 yr son clocked almost 8km on Saturday - he was shattered by the end of the walk but couldn't wait to get out again on the sunday.

I can't understand why, with the popularity of geocashing, scouting is dying out, of course the buggery may put some off.

Love to cache did it alot last summer went to some cool areas climbed a mountain and went caving to find one so much fun. has anyone used the cache app on the iphone? is it good is it worth the 15 bucks?

I geocache infrequently. Urban stuff is OK, but I like it when it's out of the city (gives a great reason to go hiking).

Planning on incorporating the motorcycle into this year. A nice 30-90 minute ride, a fun 30-90 minute hike and another 30-90 minute ride sounds like an awesome way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

I think everyone should try it (urban and rural) one time.

Lots of fun! Kids/Dog/Wife love it! If we are going to a park or area of town we will always see if there is a secondary reason. Not obsessive about it but enjoy working off the Calgary Parks 100 list :

My girlfriends sister is really into Geocaching. Theres a 12 hour marathon going on from midnight tonight till noon tomorrow. A group of people are releasing I believe 80 new geocaches. I guess they do it every season.

We're going to go out this afternoon. The kids love it. Were going to plant a cache this year. If you haven't tried it you should it's a lot of fun.

I clicked the link in macker's post and snooped around a bit. It turns out there's a geocache at the park across the street from my house. Now I know why cars keep showing up and people go looking around under the trees.
I think I understand why it'd be fun to do this in the wilderness, but it just seems anticlimactic to drive to a kiddie park in a neighbourhood and crawl around under the trees for five minutes to find a little box. Maybe it's just one stop on a larger hunt or something?

I don't find the inner city ones all that fun except for the ones down in Fish Creek that we've done; but the kids LOVE finding them regardless where they are. A box of 'treasure' is a box of treasure to them.

www.geocaching.com - basically it's an excuse to get out and do some walking/hiking.

People will hide a cache - usually a tupperware box filled with knick knacks and a log sheet - then they will upload the coordinates to the above website. All you need to do is send those coords to your GPS device - be it a garmin, iphone or whatever. Then you go and try to find it. Some are easy - some are crazy hard.

It's a great way to turn a casual walk through fish creek into a treasure hunt with the family.

We went 5 for 5 this afternoon around Edgemont. Nice way to get the kids out of the house and were seeing parts of the community we wouldn't ottherwise visit.

Never knew what this was until today. It sounded fun, so I typed in my postal code and discovered 2 super close to me so I took the kids out for a walk and found both. One had a kids flower bracelet and a pencil sharpener, while the other had over a dozen small items to choose from. Seem fun, but I agree that the fun would be in the mountains or non urban areas and I can't wait to try it out while mountain biking between the NW and Canmore.

So, what's the coolest thing you have found doing this?
Day 1 and I'm gonna have to go with the mini slinky.
