I think you guys are giving Terry way too much credit. He's the captain and like him or not, he leads the team and his players wanted him there.

I don't think it's some FIGJAM scheme. All four suspended Chelsea players were in their full strip.

It makes the team picture look better anyways.

----

now if Lampard had taken off his armband, given it to Terry and then Terry goes alone to lift up the trophy.. then you've got a case.

After a little inspection, he's in the background. Far from being the centre of attention. I get that you don;t like him and what he stands for, but this just sounds like a lot of blind hate.

go to 3:45, lift's it with him

and to go back to it being pre-meditated

this video shows a bit of it, but he whispers something to Lampard before they go up the stairs, which even at the time most writers half joked that he was saying I'll let you life this here if you return the favor at the CL

I've got no problem with him lifting the trophy with Lampard. He's the captain of the team. Yes he's a piece of crap person and I don't like what he represents, but in this isolated incident, he did nothing wrong. He was definitely not making the trophy celebration about him or anything like that.

More on Drogba's swan song with Chelsea:

Curious where he'll end up.

John Terry takes his rightful place in history as an Apollo astronaut, Usain Bolt and and a multi-Grammy winner.

First player ever to become a laughing stock for getting a CL Winners Medal?

it has nothing to do with his off-field antics

this is the equivalent of say Zdeno Chara slashing someone in the head no where near the puck with 5 minutes left in game 6 of the SCF with the Bruins leading and up 3-2 in the series

then the team they are playing comes back and wins that game, but with Chara suspended the Bruins win game 7 despite being horribly outplayed

and then Chara coming out and lifting the trophy and acting like everything is ok

comparing it to the picture of the Flames players lifting the cup is one thing, this is a complete other

I wanted to put it in green text but I couldn't as it is too difficult to accomplish that task on a smart phone.

Didier Drogba to quit Chelsea for 'leap into the unknown' in Shanghai

http://="http://www.guardian.co.uk/f...lsea-shanghai"

It'll be good to see the back of this guy once and for all.

Wow this is getting blown out of proportion.

I would compare Terry more to Chara slashing the back of Burrows leg in front of the net. Burrows falls down, puts his arm in the air waving at the ref, once he makes sure the ref is looking he clutches his leg and roles around. Once a penalty has been given he goes to the bench, is on the ice the next shift no worse the wear. He plays the rest of the game without so much of a thought to his leg. Chara instead of getting a 2 or 5 min penalty, gets a game misconduct and a 1 game suspension.

Was it a penalty? Yes without a doubt. Was it stupid. Incredibly. It almost cost his team a shot at the finals. But the diving and embellishing certainly helped sell it and make it look a lot worse than it actually was. When was the last time someone got carded for diving in a semi-final or final game? I can't even remember.

Check the replay. You can tell someone is really hurt when they make sure the ref is watching before they start rolling on the ground. I still find football painful to watch with the amount of obsurd diving that goes on. In the final for once Drogba wasn't even in the top 10 players diving. I actually can't recall him going to the ground more than 2-3 times in 120+ mins of football. Quite incredible.

And as far as Lanny, Tim Hunter and Pep holding the cup. I didn't post the picture to compare the character or personal lives of the players involved. I'm not defending John Terry. It was one example I could think of of captains who didn't play who came out to hoist a championship trophy. Not to consider or debate the reason they weren't playing. That is all.

I was ecstatic that Chelsea could pull off their last 2 wins with Terry sitting on the bench. I hope I can say the same for England in June.

And as for John Terry spottings...

Can't compare it to a slash in front of the net, which happens all the time

a player kneeing someone in the back is an extremely rare case works better, which is why the slash to the head was used because it's also an extremely rare case

It doesn't matter that Sanchez went down like he was hit with the power of 1000 suns, it's the stupidity to do it that's the problem, not the pain inflicted.

The red was going to be given regardless of how Sanchez reacted as the ref and one of his assistants both saw it.

After winning two trophies and making Chelsea play like they’ve actually met each other before, Di Matteo felt confident of being offered the role but it’s understood Roman Abramovich is looking for something a bit more Nobel-Prize-winning-y from the ovoid-faced Italian.

Di Matteo said: “I was given the alternative task of making everybody in the world not want to punch John Terry in the face with a fist made out of threshing machines, but boxing off cancer seemed a more realistic target.
