Default laptop issues-advice needed

We've got a Dell Inspiron 1545 (about 4 years old I guess) which really has just became our 13 yr old's computer. It's starting to overheat and now and there are messages saying it's battery life is coming to an end. It needs a new space bar as well. I'm kind of out of touch with costs of this kind of thing any more. Am I better off just buying something new here? Nowdays kids pretty much need some kind of computer it seems and I dont want her on my stuff.

As someone who tried repairing a laptop that was experiencing difficulties a year or so ago - my advice is to replace it.

We spent less than the cost of a new one in repairing ours, but it was not insignificant (maybe $150 - $200). That repair caused it to work for another 4 months where it completely crapped out.

It's amazing how the cost of purchase vs. repair has basically forced a completely consume and dispose society, but that's the way it goes.
