Ok, added both of you.

Server address is: minecraft.tnlonline.ca

If you want to double check if you can log in, it will be online until after we run our match on Monday (I don't always have it running.)

You can look around the spawn city or if you want to play around with Ultra Hardcore, use the warp listed and then click on the sign. It is a temporary hardcore world right now, as the real one is being saved for Monday.

I don't know what Ultra Hardcore is. Sounds like a noob like me would get schooled badly.

Sure what the hell, I'm in.

I think my laptop has bit the big one.

Last night I was trying to figure out how to do the video recording for our game on Monday. I downloaded Dxtory as suggested by QuadCity, and when I went to install it said I needed some framework .net program. So I download/install that from Microsoft's site, it says I need to restart, computer shuts down, I hear 1 long beep and 2 short beeps and nothing happens (the computer is running but nothing happens on the screen).

My limited google skills are telling me the thing is pretty much pooched and because it's a few years old now it isn't worth repairing.

Anyone familiar with this?

Look here under the manufacturer of your motherboard and it might give you more hints.

Thanks Rathji. It's definitly 1 long beep and 2 short beeps...so it doesn't look good. The laptop is at least 5 years old now so I'm not too interested in trying to save it. Luckily I've recently taken everything I want/need off it so I'm not too worried about it.

so moving on...

A couple months ago they replaced all the computers (and gave away the old) at Mrs Camo's work. It's an engineering consulting office, and the computers apparently get replaced every two years, so I thought it might be a good opportunity to get a desktop for free that I could easily upgrade into something useful.

So today I went on a bit shopping spree...got a new 23" monitor, gaming mouse and keyboard and the Logitech G35 headset so I can do commentary for our hardcore matches.

After setting everything up, I'm really starting to think that trying to upgrade this thing isn't worth it at all and I should just get something new. But I really don't know anything about computers... so maybe throwing some more RAM into it (upgrading to 2 GB) and upgrading the OS might be enough to handle minecraft etc...

A few specs...

windows xp 2002 lol
intel pent 4
cpu 2.8 ghz
510 mb RAM
Radeon 7000
not sure what else I should mention.

anyone have any advice?

part of me just wants to go and buy something like this tomorrow and be done with it.

adding to my last post...

I went to Crucial's website looking at memory and did the scan they provide.

The results:

board: D865GLC
4 slots
2-256 mb
2-empty

memory type, DDR PC2700, PC 3200, (non-ECC)

Max memory 4GB
Current 512 MB
Total slots 4
Available 2

Each slot can hold DDR PC2700, 3200 with max 1 GB per slot

Your current computer will have some low framerates on Minecraft. The Costco one you linked to is overkill for Minecraft, but at least you can record video with no framerate problems.

A quick question for tomorrow - Do I need to install an earlier version of Minecraft for this? Anything else need to be done on the client side of the game to be ready for this? I'm gonna look for a recording program today and otherwise the fiancee should be ready to go.

At this point I can't even get minecraft to start on this thing. It starts to load, but then goes to a black screen and then exits back to the desktop. I get these error files each time.

Spoiler!

I had a heck of a time trying to get the Logitech G35 recording game sounds along with the commentary in WinXP. I assume your new Certified Data dekstop is Windows 7, and hope you have much better luck than I. I'm not sure if my problem was a limitation in XP, or the Logitech driver didn't support mixing audio sources.

If they don't work out hopefully you can exchange them for something with a 1/8" inch minijack.

Do we have a plan for some kind of voice-com client? I know last time we had the CP Vent server, but that should be gone I would imagine.

Alright, got everything set up, mic and all. Just a couple recording questions:

- The file size fraps outputs is huge. I'm talking like 500MB a minute. You guys seem to record in pretty high quality so I assume you all deal with that (the half size quality looked pretty bad). Do you split the file every 4GB (an option in fraps) or just let it make one really gigantic file for the entire UHC run?
- What program do you use to encode the recording into something more manageable?

Thanks!

I will be doing fraps in half size for this.

I use windows movie maker to encode.

As for Vent, I never even thought of it. We will just have to do in game chat for the preliminary stuff

Setting up a Mumble server (Murmur) isn't very hard, but I certainly won't have time to do it in the next 20 hours.

As far as video recording, DXTORY doesn't seem to have the option to break it into chunks. During our previous round of UHC I had intended to stop and start the recording manually every hour or so. Unfortunately, my PC crashed like 30 minutes into the game, so I lost everything up to that point. I was thinking of stopping/starting the recording every 15 or 20 minutes this time. Rathji, how often does that "Saving" message pop up? I was thinking of using that like a mark, assuming its the same for all players. I've been pleasantly surprised at how well Win7 handles 50-100 gig video files, so the only reason I want to split up my files is to minimize losses due to any potential crashes or whatever.

I will be putting a server message at 30 min intervals, starting when the match does.
