Can anyone recommend a lens that would give good subject isolation at wide angle (about 28mm equivalent)?

I know the Nikon 24mm f/1.4 and a full frame would work... but that's a pricey combination, even to rent. Is there any cheaper alternative, preferably for DX?

I did just pickup the Nikkor 10-24mm superwide.
It can stop down to f/3.5 at the widest angle.

I haven't really attempted to isolate a subject, but I was able to shoot this with the lens.

Perhaps look into a used Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8, I also have this lens and it's very versatile.
They can be had for around the $850.00 range.

I'm looking for something that will get me better pics at CCEE. Pretty disapointed with this year's results - too many ugly, ugly backgrounds and they're quite sharp. (18mm f/3.5 mostly)

Maybe 2.8 would be that critical bit of difference, or I guess the other option is to try to use heavy flash up close for a dark background but that brings its own problems.

Both of those are too long on DX (I have the 35 1.8, but can't use it because I need to stand about twice as far back as everyone with a point and shoot, which means I don't get a clear shot). Thanks though.

I'm thinking realistically that the best option that's under 1K is the lens you just sold (Tokina 11-16 2.8). Does it give you any bokeh wide open for groups for people at 16?

The Tokina didn't perform too well at f/2.8, I used it between f/8 and /16 or so for landscape and night shots.

Super wide angles aren't really designed for portrait / group style shooting.

Maybe get yourself a SB-700 or 900 and try to isolate your subjects by lighting them.

Or rent a lens or two from the camera store and what works.

I have the SB-700... maybe I need to learn to use it better. I was using it for fill quite a bit because everything was top-lit., but One of my friends who I shoot though is highly susceptible to red-eye. If I were to use the 16 end it wouldn't really be too wide.

Was just ribbin ya. Also, I went by that location in parkland the other day, and it wasn't quite how I described it and how I remembered it. It was more of a hilly Mckenzie Lake area that would be in the foreground in front of the hospital, as opposed to the rows of McKenzie Town and Aubern Bay style sprwwal that I described before.

It'll still be a great shot, though, and it looks like the hospital just needs a little more painting done near the top of the building before it's photo ready.
