my guess at a starting 11
Hart
Johnson/Terry/Cahill/Cole
Parker/Lampard
Walcott/Gerrard/Young
Rooney (Welbeck in the first 2)

Yeah, it's a bit surprising but I guess they'll think about playing him on the left at times?

No Micah Richards? Adam Johnson is much better then Downing, how is he not in the squad?

would definitely be my choice as well, but everything I have read in the past day or so says that Hodgson is going to go with Johnson

also this

Hodgson #eng on Micah Richards: "It was difficult. In Phil Jones we have a player who has done well at rb. It was one of Jones or Richards"

which means Johnson was in there regardless
which also means any team with a decent attack from the left automatically starts 1-0 up

Gary Neville might still be the best right-sided player on that team. He should have picked himself.
France will murder that England midfield and defense in the first game. Ribery and Valbuena will have a field day up and down the flanks. Evra and Debuchy too.

Agreed, except on Carroll.
The anti-Carrick crowd perceives him as a virgin with his threatening penetration.. Thats a fair thought, but this was his best season, and he bossed the rear for United.
The benefit to Jones, is he can fill in for Cahill.
Johnson getting auto'd disturbs me. Wes Brown is still better than he is.
I'm no Carroll apologist, but at least he's an oak tree for Young/Walcott crosses. God I hope we get the world class Walcott, and not the one that disappears without a trace.
Downing lol

Wouldn't Crouch be the better oak tree than Carroll?

Powerplay Quarterback

Watching Carroll the last month or two, I'm not surprised he's there.
It's easy to look at stats and say he shouldn't be, but he has absolutely dominated games recently. When he plays with confidence, he can really do some damage. His holdup play has improved tremendously from last season, and he wins everything in the air. Liverpool's attack has been inept this year, but with a different supporting cast hopefully he will shine.
Downing is a real shocker though. He's had one good game recently, but hit the post twice including on a penalty. He's the opposite of good form and/or confidence.

if Carroll plays like he did in the FA Cup final I am fine with the selection
he has shown nothing that his performance there is near the norm though
I would have gone with Grant Holt

Carroll is young though, so I don't think its a bad idea to get him involved. He likely won't play anyway, besides maybe as a sub if they are desperate for a goal.
The Downing selection I don't understand. It is reasonable that Roy would like to have a winger who actually plays out wide, but Downing was completely useless this year.

Justifying Oxlade-Chamberlain's inclusion in the squad.
Quote:
“He is a very exciting player who has made an impression on me, not least in his performance against AC Milan at the Emirates,” Hodgson said.
I was there live and saw how well he dealt with Pirlo and Ambrosini. He can play wide or central and for future and can continue as he started.”
Is Roy aware that Pirlo moved to Juventus, and that Ambrosini wasn't even in the squad that evening? Would this also go some way towards explaining some of his bizarre squad selections?

Roy Hodgson Names Squad, Already Confused
two of the names garnering the most attention seem to be Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Andy Carroll, two youngsters with lots of potential, but actual contributions to the Euros up for liberal speculation. The former is 18 and uncapped, thus making this a rather big deal for him. But Roy’s pretty comfortable with the selection for reasons which don’t actually exist, which has to be reaffirming for the fans.

Woah. That is grim. Pray that Hart doesnt get injured, how does Rob Green still get England invites?
I dont know about that team as far as scoring is concerned. Those defenders are probably going to get worked hard.
