Servers coming down again.
Edited by Lylirra on 5/15/12 1:56 PM (PDT)
1:55 p.m. PDT - Starting at approximately 2:15 p.m. PDT, we will be bringing Diablo III servers in the Americas offline for urgent maintenance to address several issues that are impacting the game. We anticipate that maintenance will last for about an hour and that servers will be available at approximately 3:30 p.m. PDT. We will provide further updates as they are necessary. Thank you for your patience.
Interesting they also added a queue to the game.
"Diablo III servers are full. You have entered the queue. Queuing..."

Also not sure if this issue was fixed yet but reports that if you trade your follower gear thats equipped to you it boots you out and won't let you log back in. For example i'm wearing a shield and i drag it from my equip screen to the follower.
I'm assuming this was found from someones attempt at duping gear using the follower.

There could be, there are a number of very very large companies that have huge #'s of servers, but typically they're leased to other companies, who sublease those, etc etc. But there are some really huge ones, maybe even some that could handle that kind of temporary setup.
But like Rathji says it might also be a function of the hardware requirements and stuff, making that more difficult, especially across companies.

Socialist server farms?
I have a guy I work with who's gone through the whole gambit with working with a massive # of servers, from having your own facility to having it in the cloud to leasing servers to virtualization... they've left virtualization and cloud behind as neither could deliver the performance they needed with the given resources, now he focuses more on being able to deal with easily rolling out more servers and/or dealing with failures. It's not an easy thing, and everyone's needs are different.

Yeah the guy I know ran their stuff on Amazon for a while, and the performance and failure rates were just too much to make it viable for what they were doing (which was very different than what a lot of people do, but about as close as to what I can imagine Blizzard does as I can think of).

Little ashamed of myself. Had the day off work so stayed up until 8am playing (got on the servers right away when they went live) and slept for 2 hours. Was back at it at 10am and played until they went down about an hour ago.
I promised myself this wouldn't happen again

So is the first act just the Beta content, or was beta just a small part of the first act?

The latter of your two; just the first part of the first act.

The thread should be re-titled to "Diablo 3 - Release date is hurry up and work servers so we can play"

When I left for work at 7am, I started up the download (for the third time...). I get home at 4:30 to find that my computer has managed to struggle through 25% in the interim. Not too happy about that. I had expected it to finish long before I got home. >.<

There was a fix for that posted earlier in this thread. Go back a page or two.
