Default Riding a Motorcycle in BC - new laws June 1st

some new laws coming into effect in BC on june 1st for anyone riding a motorcycle.....

Quote:
Beanies and skull caps worn by some motorcyclists and their passengers will no longer be legal in B.C. as the province introduces new safety regulations to reduce deaths.

Starting June 1, only helmets that meet industry standards will be allowed as part of the revamped motorcycle-safety laws.

New regulations will also require passengers to place their feet on foot pegs or floor boards to prevent people from being thrown off balance and risk crashing.

Children who aren't able to reach foot rests will no longer be allowed to ride on motorcycles.

Makes sense. It seems to have become trendy for people to pass off bicycle helmets or antique helmets as motorcylce helmets.

I thought helmets always had to have a DOT sticker on them. What's the new standard? Snell?

B.C. was the only jurisdiction in Canada to allow bikers to put anything they want on their heads and call it a helmet.

Another big change is still coming. The B.C. government plans to move into a graduated licensing program involving power restrictions for new riders.

Does any other province in Canada do something like that? I'm pretty sure in Europe you have to start riding something small then progress through the years.

I just passed my class 6 today. Phew!

B.C. really likes the nanny state stuff. Hopefully Redford doesn't try to copy them again.

It isn't like this new law is stupid or anything. I know it's not my business what other people wear, but Beanies are ****ing stupid and anyone who wears one is a complete moron.

I don't agree with the power restriction thing though if that ever gets passed. If someone wants to buy a liter sport bike or a 1300cc cruiser as their first bike, let them. They'll crash, regret the decision and maybe just learn something.

The article is not very big. I wonder if Sikhs will still be able to avoid wearing helmets. If so, then I think this is bull####.

How does it effect your life to justify them being a moron? I highly doubt your life choices make you immune to being a moron as you call it. Something about throwing stones from glass houses.

Yeah, Ontario has graduated licensing.

Quote:
Graduated Licensing for Motorcycle Riders

If you're a new driver applying for your first licence to ride a motorcycle, you'll need to enter Ontario's graduated licensing system. That means you'll earn full driving privileges in two stages.
I don't see anything wrong with this since I've got mine.
Actually I got my class 6 mailed to me when they first came out because I had a registered motorcycle. When I got back into bikes after not riding for years I did take a motorcycle course for my own peace of mind though.

new brunswick has a staged liscense but it only works as follows.

0-599cc - if you ride that size bike to the test
599cc-unlimited - have to do the test on that size bike

is at least better then here as you can take a scooter or a small dual purpose and pass your test then go home and get on your r1

If you're in a motorcycle accident without a helmet, you'll probably be needing a nanny.

Besides safety, for me it comes down to where my tax money goes. If it's going to pay for the hospitalization and unemployment insurance of somebody, and that person did nothing to minimize their potential injury, then I am not really okay with that.

Apparently the power restrictions will be based on a consultation to determine the best model. Maybe enough skill could be displayed to bypass any restrictions.

Wow, that is silly. Here if you test on a small scooter, your license restricts you to one.

Or they could end with an AVOIDABLE brain injury and spend the rest of their life a burden to the healthcare system and taxpayers.

Sometimes a nanny is needed to keep children from doing something stupid that will impact the family.

My Dad's friend (a 45-50 year old man), got his license 1 year ago and within the week crashed his 1300cc motorcycle and his hip is now permanently busted. It's not just children. Regardless, MOST people are smart enough not to buy a bike that's too big for them, I went for the R6 as my first bike, but would have never went higher.

I'm not advocating buying a huge bike to start, I just don't think you should be limited right off the bat. If someone starts on a BMW S1000RR and respects the power, then it could work out (though it probably won't) and that's fine.

When did I say it affected my life? My first line was "I know it's not my business". If you legitimately think that someone wearing a Beanie as a "safety" measure isn't being a moron than I don't know what else to add.

Replace children with idiots. Some people need help with decisions like this because now I'm guessing our medical system will be paying for your dad's friends care.

Wait... it's 2012 and helmets weren't already mandatory? This seems like one of those "I can't believe people used to smoke on airplanes" kinda things.

Put yourself in your friend's dads position, do you think that he is glad that it isn't a nanny state or do you think he is now cursing the fact that he is forced to live the rest of his life in a state of chronic pain... and the fact of the matter is that he is lucky in that he isn't dead.

Seriously the benefits to this law vastly outweigh the imaginary negatives... plus didn't you fall off your bike and cut yourself up pretty good - add a bit more power and a bit more speed to that situation and you would be the one with a fractured hip.
