Default Devonian Gardens - almost ready to reopen

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...togallery.html

Renovations are almost finished at Devonian Gardens in downtown Calgary, where workers were busy on the weekend hoisting up and planting exotic trees.

The refurbished gardens are set to open this summer. Here's a sneak peak photogallery.

Initial reactions from the pictures aren't amazing for me, it looks like the rest of the newly renovated TD Square.. I maybe would have liked it to have it's own vibe. Just a quick reaction from pictures though.

Excited for this to finally open again.

I'm not too sure about this, from the pictures it just doesn't look as large as the original gardens. I will withhold judgement until I actually take it in once it is open.

Here's an article from the City website along with a good video showing the changes. That kids' playground looks kinda cool.

Also, don't bring turtles to Devonian Gardens!

Can't wait to see it opened! The play area will be great for my daughter when she gets a bit older.

I was hoping for an Amazon rainforest. That would have been hella cool.

Yeah, every rendering I've seen of the new Devonian Gardens make it look really sparse compared to the old one. It's more a bunch of trees along the walkway as opposed to the place it was before.

Yeah, I'm a bit disappointed with how it looks there, hopefully it's nicer in person. The old gardens were an indoor urban forest.

What's the history of the gardens, anyway? Did the original developer donate them to the city out of the goodness of their heart, or was it a density bonusing thing, or what?

shermanator, that's my feelings as well.... but I hold out hope since the landscaping is the last to be done that they will fill it in nicely.

The 2nd picture I posted looks like a food court setting, I hope it's not that way when finished.

Maybe wait until its fully and completely finished before you pass judgement?

Which is fair enough. The attached mall went from an old mall to a nice new mall. If the gardens goes from a lush tropical oasis to a nice new mall with a few trees, people are going to be disappointed. If it's still an actual garden setting I'm sure people will be pleased.

Count me in the crowd that views this as a step back. The urban forest look make the place have a romantic vibe.

As long as it's still okay for me to pee in the bushes there, I'm happy.

When I would come to Calgary as a boy, my grandfather would take me Devonian Gardens. I remember the playground with the pirate ship vibe, or I may have imagined it was a pirate ship. If I reflect on my grandfather I think of him and I at the Devonian Gardens.

In my later years I went back, and I proposed to a girl at Devonian Gardens, unfortunately she said yes.... No longer with her.

I have only good memories of the old gardens, hopefully many people will have good memories made in the new gardens...

It seems clear that those tree beds are going to be filled in with flowers, ferns, etc. I think that will make the space feel much more lush and complete.

I loved the gardens as kid. My parents used to take me all the time to feed the fish. Lots of fond memories there.
