Default Valve's Employee Handbook

http://newcdn.flamehaus.com/Valve_Handbook_LowRes.pdf

Perhaps this belongs in the Tech Talk forum, I'm not sure.

This is Valve's Employee Handbook. It is rather unique in how it goes out of its way to demonstrate the culture and philosophy of the company. I don't know why it's floating around on the internet but it's kind of neat to thumb through.

Love the Ricochet joke at the end. Did anyone ever play that game?

This is really cool.

I could totally never work for Valve.

That would never work for me. I need structure and training.

Just reading this I think I would either be fired in about 4 minutes or I'd take the whole thing over.

Nothing like rolling your desk around looking for a team to join.

Most bizarre thing ever. I'm sure it works for them, but man they must lose a wack of people which is indicated by the what we don't do well section.

Its great to have a free flowing hippie commune for a workplace, but benefits like a company vacation (Seriously? When I'm not working I really don't wanna hang out with my work mates) and dry cleaning and all that stuff wouldn't balance out the chaos for me.

Should you quit, you will have an exit interview. And then there will be cake.

I always found that when bosses go out of their way to tell you they are not your boss and you are all equals they will be an absoloute mofo when they think you have screwed up.

It's not an actual employee handbook. It's was "leaked" as a cool recruiting idea, and contains virtually nothing that a new employee would need to know.

Still very cool though.

The concept of a "Title-less" organization where no one reports to anyone sounds great but is BS. Especially for IT people who in my experience all think that they, individually, are the only ones that have the right answer.

It'll be like Lord of the Flies in no time.

This is why I always feel sympathetic towards our IT guys - I can't imagine it's any fun at all doing IT for an IT company.

The worst people to support are the people who almost know what is going on. They only want to tell you what they think is the solution without telling you what the problem is.
