Liberal candidate has a real chance at winning Calgary-McCall still. Interesting.

Before I left work tonight, a few of us were discussing this blowout. 4 people in the conversation had their votes swayed by the inaction of Smith regarding her two buffoon bigots who were just exercising their "Freedom of Speech"

So I guess I will Godwin this thread early. If those candidates had stepped up and said as Aryan Nation members, they believed anyone not white should be eradicated, would Smith had protected their freedom of Speech?

It was hers to lose, and she lost it based on her inaction on removing those two idiots. Had she done it, it would have sent a clear message she was A) A true leader and decision maker. B) Not a supporter of hate mongering bigots. In fact I believe it would have swayed votes her way with the support she already had. In the end, it just cost her votes and gained her nothing.

I voted PC under the thinking of "Better the devil you know, than the one you don't."

I disagree.

The WRP lost because they are relatively inexperienced. They peaked too early.

The social conservatives coming out is part of that inexperience. But is the party actually socially conservative? I don't believe that for a second.

I gotta say if there's one inquiry they definetely need to do its into polling. This is a 20 point swing the other way. Never seen such ridiculously wrong advanced polling.

Or she was trying to send a message that WRP members don't have to tow the party line all the time. Sure, those morons need to be weeded out, but not by silencing them. That isn't democracy at all.

The one thing I'll say, I'm still happy to have the leader of this province being decided in a contested general election. I think it's much healthier to have "blue tories" and "red tories" battling it out in a public general election where the province decides than in a leadership contest where backroom alliances and runoff votes end up with everyone's second choice becoming premier. The last few elections haven't been contested in a way where watching the results surprised anyone, and it makes it more exciting and makes politics more relevant to the population.

Danielle Smith is certainly no social conservative, but I think many (not all!) WRP candidates and supporters are.

Alberta is not Quebec. No crazy momentum shifts or green waves.

I still find it disgusting that the Premier will be somebody who received less than 19% of the first vote. Brutal system.

I don't mind the PC's but Redford is awful.

Calgary-Shaw is a 2 vote lead for WRP. That's amazing at this stage.

I was open to change, but the 3 things turned me off of the WR:

1) The financially irresponsible $300 handout. Shows lack of true leadership.
2) Not believing in Global Warming. Shows they don't have a grasp on reality and are willingly keeping their head in the sand.
3) Right-wing wacko stance on social issues permeates the party. I think most Albertas are beyond arguing about abortions, gay people, and race.

Right now the PCs are projected to lose three seats, including Morton. Good night for them I'd say.

A lot of PC supporters might be too. In fact, some of the candidates might be as well. Question is, does it become party policy? No. And the WRP will have to now prove that they can keep it from being party policy.

That they would form a government was too good to be true anyways.

There is towing the party line, and there is sheer stupidity in decision makking.

If some guy, stood in the middle of my workplace, and said "Gays burn in hell, in a lake of fire." In front of my customers, and staff, I would fire him immediately whether it was or wasn't legal to do so. "Sue me", is all I would have to say.

Regardless of what you believe, there are sometimes things that are best left unsaid.
