True... but he's the best looking prospect we've had in years and he may be the start of great things to come.
In all the draft choices that the Flames have made in the past 10 years this is the only one I've gotten excited about. I feel it in my bones that this kid is a winner. Good things are going to happen.

Yikes!! Rerun getting tons of slack for suggesting Sven COULD be a key piece to build around?
I agree with Rerun, Sven is a game breaking, hard working, elite level talent. I don't think anyone is saying he alone can get us a cup but who can deny that he may be a key piece going forward?

The poor kid is going to be under enough pressure. No need to make expectations unmanageable.

I just don't think it makes sense to say that the model of a rebuild should be the Edmonton Oilers. For all intents and purposes so far, they've been a failure, and will remain that way until they do something. So to say the Flames can't compete with the Oilers in terms of players to the Oilers to build around doesn't make any sense to me.

Maybe its the liquor talking but people throw the term loser around way to often on this board, and especially seem to take some kind of grim pleasure in throwing it at a player like Iginla who has literally done everything for this franchise that was asked for him.
Maybe it would have been better for him a few years back to tell the Flames and the fanbase to cram it when he reached free agency.
Sometimes I really strongly dislike our fanbase. I get that people are angry but the amount of over the top statements is getting kinda sickening.
I know I'll take a ton of heat for posting this.
But some people are taking this team and this sport way to fracking seriously.
The only control you have is to attend or not attend a game, to watch a game on tv or not watch it on tv.
But calling a guy like Iginla a loser makes me really question the whole value of a internet hockey discussion board.

^ I agree with you CC, however when someone refers to a first ballot HOF player as a loser I would just consider the source and move on.
I am reminded of something George Carlin once said. "just think about how dumb the average person is, and the realize that half of the people in the world are dumber than that".

And who's to say Baertschi won't be just as good of a player as Eberle? I'm not saying he will, but we can hope, and if so, he would be a great piece to build a franchise around.
Plus, it seems like the Oilers rushed Hall and RNH into the league. They might be able to put up points, but they were boys playing with men, and got beat up quite a bit, which is why they keep getting injured. If we become bottom dwellers, there would be a lot more pressure to rush these types of players rather than staying patient with their development, a la Seguin.

The Oilers basically have 4 players with the equivalent talent or better of Baertschi and people are trying to say they don't have the necessary depth. Maybe people need to think about that for a second before responding.

Great let me know when that gets them somewhere. For now, they remain the 1st overall pick in the last 3 drafts.
These posts are so pathetic because people think you only need offensive players to win the cup.
Yes the Boston Bruins won with no superstars like Edmonton to build their franchise around. Instead, their franchise was built around a thirty-something goalie and defenceman.

I know that one draft choice does not a General Manager make. As far as I'm concerned the jury is still out on Jay Feaster.

Sure the Bruins won with a goalie who was hot and a pretty good defenseman. Superstars though? Not in the usual sense. Their leading scorer that year had less than 70 pts

Boston's highest paid forward is Brian Rolston. Definitely no superstars up front, although Seguin could eventually qualify.

kind of feels like ground hog day with the oilers constantly being brought up. The facts are that you need to hit home runs on players after the first round. The oilers, imo, still have not proved that they can draft effectively. Having the first overall makes it pretty easy to draft a player that is decent. What differentiates championship teams from wannabe teams is the drafting record after the first round. Look at any of the cup winners and contenders and they all have players making a difference drafted well out of the top 10.
I know it maybe still be a bit early but Sven might be the first draft pick they may pan out in over 20 years. That is the fundamental problem with Calgary. Kipper and iginla in their prime really masked the problem. I am optimistic that between Sven, Reinhart, Ramage, Granlund, ferland, and the wonder kid from Boston college we can look back at this crop being the turning point on the beyond poor draft record.

Yup. That Chara and Thomas don't rank as superstars. Vezina's and Norri's be damned.
Chara is pretty good and Thomas was just hot? Reality check says hello.

Your definition of a superstar and mine are obviously not the same. Sure they have each won a trophy... but lots of trophy winners were not superstars. I consider a superstar someone who has dominated the game his whole career and has been a game breaker for that career.

Do you even watch hockey? Are you seriously debating that Chara and Thomas aren't superstars?
