Default Shaganappi Expansion

I'm glad this is finally happening. Shagnappi was always bottlenecking on winter mornings for several years and it would have only gotten worse now that it connects to Stoney.

Is there a place where you can look up City of Calgary road maps or contruction plans so you can see what the configuration of the new intersections and roads would look like?

All the signs beside the road are saying construction is going to be from April - November of this year.

What stretch are you talking about? John Laurie to Stoney? I haven't noticed any signs by Shagnappi/Crowchild.

It's the stretch from Edgemont Drive to John Laurie down to Northland Mall. There are cones out there, I see surveyors every morning, and there are the big solar powered signs in a few spots saying "Expansion Apr-Nov"

Shagnappi/Crowchild got their overpass 10 years ago but Shagannapi John Laurie badly needs one.

This should be no problem, I'll just google Shaganappi Expansion and see what pops up, I'm sure something helpful will be at the top.

For serious though.

Hmm.. I don't drive this intersection often enough, but I always thought that westbound left-turn is what backs up. I would have thought for sure that one would get dual lefts too... or at least an extended queue length. I'll just assume the improvement to the other legs improves the capacity of that left turn.

Other than that I like it. Hopefully it'll extend the life of this intersection another 10-15 years.

good idea...as from the other thread I believe they need to work on Crowchild/Kensington first, or maybe even both!

Hopefully this will help the traffic that builds up, but they really need to fix that super long red light for those on Shaganappi

Crowchild/Kensington would cost about 100 times more. You can't delay small projects just so you can save up for a needed large project.

Shagannapi/John Laurie is the #1 311 compaint in terms of congestion. Transportation Optimization is doing this work for the short term, but I would expect in the longer term that an interchange will happen. It may show up in the next 10 year Transportation Infrastructure Investment Priority (TIIP) list that will come forward later this year. It's certainly on the radar as a possibility.

Yeah in the wintertime, Shagannapi gets back up all the way up to the top of the hill!

As a taxpayer, why should I have to pay for this when I don't use this intersection?

^^^ Glad you got that in there, even though a good chunk of Calgary suburbanites probably use that intersection.

Well those particular parasitic communities had better be paying for the whole thing themselves!

Well not quite "saving" per se, But this project defers the construction and maintenance costs on an interchange at this site for 10 years.

Thankfully since the build of Stoney Trail extension off of Crowchild I do not even have to go Shagannapi / John Laurie.

Ever since the John Laurie / 14th street overpass was constructed there was a need for an overpass in this location as well. In the winter time the past 8+years (I do not remember when 14th got the overpass) at Shag / John Laurie it is an absolute parking lot.
Even now in good weather at rush hour it is an absolute mess.

It is good they are adding dedicated turn lanes, but I find it doubtful there will be a significant improvement in the perception of mant people who use the road.

Just my 2 cents but I find it wasteful that so much money is spent on minor improvements every couple years when the bullet should just be bit & the appropriate improvement (overpass) should've been put in years ago.... I would also assume even more of the conjestion is due to new communities being built past country hills boulevard.

As a former resident of Hawkwood (87-04) I am quite surprised to see that this intersection is not going to an interchange yet. As it stands now I use it probably 4 times a year and never during rush hour, but even then it is still a very busy area.

I can imagine how an interchange may be needed there; but the costs are a lot higher. Would it be better to built one interchange, or make improvements to 10 other intersections as well?
