Recommendations on where to buy Paving Stones for a patio?

Hey all,

Since spring is upon us the time is near for a backyard project of building a small stone and/or brick patio below our deck and also a stone faced flower bed along the front of our deck.

Basically I was wondering if anyone could recommend a place to purchase the stone and/or brick that is reasonably priced and has a good product? I have been checking out Burnco for starters....

Burnco has a landscape centre at Heritage/Glenmore, and one at Balzac.

Home Depot and Rona both carry the same Expocrete pavers that Burnco does. Sometimes they have those scratch and Save's that will make it cheaper than Burnco

Unless you know a contractor who can buy directly from Expocrete, I have found the cheapest place is Ornamental Garden Supplies up on Aero Rd behind Deerfoot Mall. Will certainly be better than big box stores, unless the store is willing to include delivery.

Keep in mind I have been out of the business since about 2008, so things might have changed.

This is a good place for sure. And my favorite stones to work with (and likely the cheapest) are 'decor'. They're the ones that have a square and a hexagon attached. They are easy to lay down and are structurally sound.

Go to Totem Building Supplies. We have pretty much everything that Burnco/Armtec has and we can deliver the next day.
But I'm bias.

Actually what I was looking for were the uni-decor ones:

If you want charcoal Expocrete Stackstone I have a bunch of it that I can let go for cheap ($150). Some of them may have concrete adhesive on them but the majority of them do not. We purchased them for $800 from Ornamental Stone a couple of years ago but then my wife wanted to go a different direction with our yard (after I had put them together as a flowerbed). At any rate, they would be good for base layers as you could put your brand spanking new stackstones on top and no one would be the wiser.

OK maybe calling them ugly is hurting my chances of getting rid of them...how about visually pleasing challenged?

As long as you lay them 100% correctly. If there is any gradual shift or 'twist' of the blocks, that hex shape comes back to bite you in the rear. Not as bad as with these stones though - those are just murder.

Personally, I would go with what they call Cobble as it gives the most leeway and freedom to make a good design. It really depends on what colors and style you are trying to match/create though. I am sure I have made a post or two about it on these forums.

Haha, I can run it by her but something tells me her mind is still going to be tainted by the "ugly" word now...

Reaper - Will check with the wife on the colors that she wants for this. May work though.

The uni-decor ones and the cobbles both look pretty sharp...so many choices...

When I landscaped I loved and hated installing pavers. Sure it was lighter and less physical labour than a retaining wall, but man where they finicky little buggers.
