Or it means that he never established himself and the military is really in control. Kim Jong-il was much more established in the North Korean hierarchy when his father died than Kim Jong-un was when Kim Jong-il died.
Not a critism, however the North Korean Leadership is absolutely loaded with members of the Kim family, its not just Kim Jung-un that runs the country.
The real power brokers at the moment are in the background running the transition.
Kim Jung-Il's daughter, Kim Sul-song is very powerful, she basically runs the propaganda department and is thought to be a heavy hitter in North Korea's internal security apparatus. Ironically she is filling the same role the Kim Jung-Il did before he ascended to the role of Party Central.
His son Kim Jong-Nam made famous for his attempt to go to Disney Land has fallen out of favor both for the trip and the fact that he basically is one of the few reformers in that family
Kim Kyong-hui is the daughter of Kim Il-sung, she is extremely powerful and is a member of the inner circle in Korea. She was repeatedly spotted standing behind Kim Jung-Un at the funeral of her father and is thought to be a key policy maker in the party. Her husband Jang Sung-taek is considered the second most powerful person in North Korea and heads their armed forces committee.
Basically there isn't an easy way to dislodge the Kim dynasty without the aid of the army, and the army is extremely loyal to the Kim's and run directly by a Kim
The daughter is in the background. She's considered to be very beautiful and the most ruthless of the next generation of the Kims.
She should have been named the successor, but her sex probably eliminated her from an open leadership role
I don't think they would do anything to defend North Korea, but they would likely want to defend their own interests within their sphere of influence.
I'm sure if it came down to an all out war and regime change in North Korea (which would also likely mean Western/American occupation), China would much rather be the ones taking over that task. I don't see an all out war of China against the U.S., but rather a proxy war between the two (again).
China's sphere of influence is the US economy. They wouldn't back NK any farther than a boardroom table.

I don't know if you could class the first Korean War as a proxy war between the American's and the Chinese.
The main suppport in that war came from the Soviet Union under Stalin. Kim Il-Sung was firmly in the Soviet Camp at the start of that war, the Soviets though hadn't really given full approval for the war and Noth Korea launched their invasion.
The Chinese while in the loop weren't in the loop with North Korea in that war until after the beach landing at Inchon? where it suddenly became apparent that the North Korean army was beaten.
China probably wouldn't have gotten involved in any other general then MacArthur was running that war.

North Korea really begging for a butt whooping. I can't comprehend the mentality or lack there of. These guys have a country full of starving scared citizens, and seem to have no concern for their own people. In the mean time any retroactive action must be taken with the concern of their citizens. It is like they are using their own people as hostages in a bank robbery, yet I don't see anything that they might gain from there actions.
