Default Navy Pilot saves a neighborhood.

Nice work by this guy, he knows his F-18 is toast but he makes sure to dump the 1600 gallons of fuel before ejecting, first he got his student to eject, then dumped the fuel and then got the hell out of there.witnesses say he was very low before he ejected.

The plane crashed in an apartment complex of five buildings, had he not dumped the fuel most certainly there would have been great loss of life.

In shock, the pilot apologized for his jet crashing into the apartment complex, and residents pulled him safely away from the fiery crash zone.

My parents had just left virginia beach about 20 min before this happened...said they could see the huge columns of black smoke 40 miles away.

I've been to Virginia Beach.

An explosion would be an improvment.

Headline should read "Navy Pilot Screws Over CNN".

This could have been the story of the year.

I should know the answer to this, but can the F-18 dump fuel?

When a plane dumps fuel, does it get dumped in such a way that it would mostly evaporate before hitting the ground, or are there unfortunate people below that get showered in jet fuel?

It depends how old the plane is. Some of the more modern fighter jets have advanced fuel dumperers that more effectively aerosolize the fuel. It results in a wider dispersal pattern which can lead to other issues.

rookie mistake, never appologize, it's seen as an acceptance of liability.

There was a Jaguer pilot in the RAF a few years ago that lost power over Birmingham (UK) I think, couldn't see a way to eject without risking hundreds of lives so put it nose first into a soccer field without ejecting, thats saving lives.

If he had time to dump fuel and let Goose eject couldn't he get it into the Atlantic?

Sullenberger would have made it to the Atlantic.
