Time for a Calgary version of the "big dig"?
|
That tunnel cost upwards of 14 billion dollars... and leaks.
Please god let there be other options!

That intersection is pretty bad heading north.
First Kensington Rd. then 5th: both lights can be brutal. After those, I loop around on University Dr. and go east on 24th Ave. to where I'm going, and it shaves a few minutes off my trip.
I live close to Bow Tr. and 33rd SW, and many times I just take Sarcee Tr. to get just north of downtown. Tons of back tracking, but during rush hour it's still faster than Crowchild, 14th St. or 10th St.

Get a ring road agreement in, build the ring road, bump traffic from Sarcee Trail to Stony, bump traffic from Crowchild to Sarcee and to Stony, and this could happen!
To bad that portion of the ring road is generations away.

I assume that to do anything meaningful between 5th Ave and 24th Ave that the apartments at Crowchild would have to be leveled. Already when I'm going south, I take the far right lane and exit towards University, then turn left and merge back onto Crowchild towards 5th. It's a modest time saver if you hit the light, and if you don't you still have the illusion of moving before and after the light, instead of crawling down the hill.
Aren't they redeveloping those old senior bungalows by the Enmax station as well, on the southwest corner of Crowchild and Kensington? I assume that land would be needed as well to do an interchange in place of the lights.

The lions club ripped them down and is building a seniors complex there. It's about 4 stories tall, iirc.

You are correct, it is already up. They are putting siding on it right now.
