Yes you can run vanilla minecraft very easily, but if you want extra features that are not available you would need to run a modded server, such as bukkit. The bukkit devs were recently hired by Mojang to create the standard minecraft build so it can handle these things right out of the box. Bukkit has literally thousands of plugins, from warps and teleports to economy to questing and npcs, strange mechanics and world editing features. Changing drops from blocks or mobs, giving you, or monsters more powers. Running multiple worlds at a time. The list is here.

Just wanted to post this since I got it running on my server...

Dynmap is one of the best parts of having a bukkit server instead of a vanilla minecraft server. Essentially it is a dynamic generated map that even shows where players are located, one is a top down view and the other is a isometric view. This one is in low res, but the high res one is pretty amazing, I didnt use high res because the image files are over a gig in total once they render, and my server runs inside a dropbox.

edit: Removed link - Posted Image in spoiler tags below, as some might consider it large

Just use it like you would use Google maps for the most part, moving around and zooming in and out.. The default view is just my main world, but the menu on the side can be used to see both views 90 and 30 degree of each world that is loaded.

Spoiler!

Most of that stuff is from an old server I was admin on, I pulled one item that each admin had built, kind of a nostalgic thing for me - Especially that Cathedral, quite possibly the coolest thing I have ever personally seen built in Minecraft. My daughter also got me to add some Dora and Deigo pixel art since she is obsessed. I didn't design the pixel art though, I just ran a web image through a program that gave me a block by block conversion.

The unfinished Golden Gate replica on the left is my most recent project. Math on the parabolic wires is a bit tricky and I am being lazy about figuring it out.

You need to understand that the 3 buildings (Cathedral, Domed Library and the Black roofed house) that were built by other admins were chosen by me from hundreds of other options that the best people on the server built. This isn't just a single random build.

That is one bonus about playing on a public server though, you get to see so many cool things being built (if you are on a good server) that it gives you ideas and pushes you to do some really cool things.

Actually, as posted in this thread, CP member Delgar was on the server for a time and built some really cool stuff as well. I should find some of his stuff and move it over.

Anyone watching the ultra hardcore season 3 series by guude, etho, docm77, vintagebeef, pauseunpause, and bdouble00 and others?

Man, probably the most intense series I've seen yet. So the idea is that restoring hunger will not heal your hearts, only golden apples. All these guys have to survive in an island that's has 6000 blocks shore to shore, and they're all against each other. My money is on Etho to be the last to survive (he's also canadian).

Minecraft Hunger Games basically! It is an amazing watch. PauseUnpause, Etho and VintageBeef are all Canadian. I believe Etho is from MTN STD time he mentioned as I have followed him for some time. Hands down some of the best Youtube talent for minecraft out there in this fun challenge.

Right now Etho and Kurtjmac are doing the best. I believe Etho is from Edmonton based on some basic and definitely non-stalkerish research I did.

It's a huge improvement from the last Ultra Hardcore season. There was no real reason to watch all the perspectives so I ended up only watch Guude's PoV. This season you get 4 hours of video to watch every time they upload a new episode.

It really gives you an interesting perspective on who will do well and who's going to fail. Looks like the people I thought would do well are on the verge of being eliminated and the one surprise I didn't think would do well is still at full health!

I watched Doc first, and he seemed to cause himself a lot of issues, but I thought he didn't do terribly. Then I watched Ethos and was like, nevermind, this is how its supposed to be done. The funny thing is he kept saying how bad he was doing, even though he was 10x more advanced than Doc.

I used to have a server that I can host, but I don't anymore. It'd be cool if someone can do that. We can film it on fraps and give CP some entertainment for a few days. lol

I'd definitely be in for a CP version. I'd likely be the first one gone, though, since I have a strange urge to always engage monsters in hand-to-hand combat whenever I see them.

I could run it on my box, sometime after school is done but bandwidth might be an issue. Might be able to look at a temporary upgrade for a month or so to accommodate.

Watching this series has me hooked. I even was watching it on the TV in the living room and Mrs. Rathji has started asking "So which guy is this?" and asks me to rewind when someone dies.

Personally, I am hoping that Beef comes back from his rough start to take it.

edit: When you posted, I mistakenly thought that a new episode had been released. I was in the process of queuing up a couple videos for the lunch hour and had my hopes dashed.
