Alberta’s five political parties have one week to respond to an online city survey, called CitiesMatter.ca, sent by the mayor’s office after the election writ was dropped Monday.
The survey has 10 categories relating to the relationship between Alberta’s biggest municipalities and the provincial government.
“There is often a sad lack of discussion — on the provincial and federal levels — on the issues that affect us every day,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi.

Its really not ingenious at all. As an election candidate at any level you are surveyed and quizzed by dozens of groups and organizations.

Can you show some examples of other elected civic officials putting out a survey in this fashion? I've never seen a mayor create a website for that purpose.
The genius in Nenshi is that he's using the survey as a tool to engage Calgarians in the provincial election.

Nenshi and his staff also did this for the PC leadership race if I recall correctly.

I can't show you a civic official, so if that alone makes it genius then I suppose I stand corrected. The reality is that every candidate will be approached by dozens of groups to give their party positions and stances on issues though. This is far from an original thought. I have no doubt that Nenshi and every other civic candidate completed many surveys when they ran for office in 2010, and this is the same thing.

I voted Nenshi and I have no idea why. Mainly because my girlfriend told me to. I swim with the river when it comes to her opinions.
He WAS the best candidate at the time though. He had high hopes of fixing the council, but I still don't think that's even possible. We need a dictator for a few years to get rid of the bickering. Other than that, he seems ok......

If you've observed Council over the years, you'd realize that this Council functions far, far better than the last. Perfect? no. There are certainly still lots of 8-7 votes, but the key difference is that it is almost never the same 8-7 on different issues. That I think is quite healthy. One of the reasons why it functions more effectively is how the Mayor chairs Council. He provides enough latitude in the strange procedural by-laws for strong debate and also keeps the tone more casual and light - he tends to inject some humour in there.

You could have just told her you voted for him. It's not like she'd ever find out.
