Depends on the bank.
Most banks require 1 payment is made, that is all.
Our captive lender where we send 90% of our business, that is the only requirement, 1 payment. But they trust we aren't jerking them around either.
I believe some commercial banks have gone to 90 days though, yes. I know what you are alluding to though, and it was a problem with a lot of domestics with their rebate heavy business models. The banks plugged that hole with some warnings, and also capped reserves. So the greedy dealers shot themselves in the foot, and now have lost some opportunities.
We didn't play that game, it was a slippery slope, and under no terms, do you want to lose the support of your lenders.

Incidentally, I was at the VW dealer I suspect pylon works at (I don't want to out him without his say-so) in the summer of '08 (maybe '09,) and found the service to be exceptional.
The salesman helping me, whose name I don't recall, was quite patient when I wanted to sit in a bazillion cars, and was helpful in answering all my questions. I was there for about 90 minutes with my mother and not once did I get a slimy salesman vibe.
I didn't buy a VW--I didn't end up buying anything that summer, actually--but the level of service and attention I received will not be forgotten on me.
The only other dealer in Calgary where I can offer similar comments is Sunridge Mazda. I bought a car from them in the summer of '06 pretty much based on the service alone. Though I was there about a week ago and things appear to have gone downhill.

I'm kicking around the idea of putting myself into a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited near the end of summer. I will likely try to wait until the 2013's get released, to see how much I can get a salesman to move on a 2012 as they try to clear out old stock.
When it comes to shipping out old stock for the new model year, when is it optimal to buy? Can one expect to save a considerable amount more?
I did this once in 2006 and managed to get about $6000 or so off the MSRP, but at that point the Jeeps had also undergone a complete redesign from '06 to '07.

is there a difference in pricing by geography? ie: do cars really cost less in Wetaskiwin?
if there is a difference, do you know how it is split, is rural cheaper than urban?
finally is that difference large enough to warrent the trip?

We just purchased a vehicle using a control number to chop money off of a car. I did not think the dealer in Hanna would be cheapest so I phoned around (back in December we bought).
The pricks at Eastside Dodge tried to tell me the control number was not valid and tried to shove my wife and I into an older model vehicle for more money then the guy in Hanna quoted us. I was really unimpressed with them.
The only dealership that was close (and we phoned about 15 in Alberta) was Olds Dodge. Most of the City dealerships (Calgary, Red Deer, or Edmonton) tried to send us into a model we didn't ask for.

But seriously, the relative must sign off on the sale with a photocopy of their driver's and benefits number. The employee (or retiree) can lose their benefit if they are caught cheating the program.

A question or two...
The trade in process there seems fairly opaque...is there any 'this guy is working me on the sale price, so lowball the trade in'? (For the record I'm almost the other way...not a haggler, so approaching any upcoming negotiations with a certain amount of dread).
Second, I assume it makes sense to have anything visible taken care of before you take it in to be apprased as a trade in? I have a few imperfections in my wind shield and would think it would knock the trade in value more than the cost of new glass.
Thank you to all the automotive professionals that are in this thread giving back to the CP community...my dad worked on the auto body/service side for decades and any time I've shown him anything from this thread he just nodded his head and agreed.

Actually if Pylon is still reading this thread i have a question about control numbers, or whatever else they are called.
I can get one through work for Chrysler or Ford (x-plan). Basically I get the number and the dealer shows me the invoice. So, I suspect most salesmen don't like us coming in and basically having them up against a wall on the price. What do you guys think of these programs and what's your advise on using them so as to get a good deal and not be an a-hole.
In case I come into some money and can afford a new car one day, lol, I am stuck in used territory these days!

We just bought a new BMW 3-series and they're trying to get us to buy the Tire Protection package which includes replacement of the run-flats.
What do you guys think of this? I've never had a vehicle with run-flat tires before, but I know that they can be pricey.

Run-flat tires are relatively terrible to drive on...not sure why BMW keeps pushing them. If it were me, I'd replace them with regular tires when the time came.
Did you get the new f22?

Simple. It drops the requirement to provide a spare which drops weight, pretty much the #1 MO of most manufacturers these days, and it has the added side effect of upping their cargo numbers.
I hate them.

Yeah, that was my guess, but I'd rather just get non-run-flats as you say. Way cheaper too.
I was going to get a different set of wheels/tires so that we have winter & summer combos.
No, didn't get the F22, a 2011 E90.

I have an X5 with the run flats on them. I probably wouldn't have bought them if I had bought the vehicle new, but my boss bought them when he bought the vehicle from the dealer and then I bought the X5 from my boss.
They seem to ride fine, but I wouldn't know what to compare them to. I only drove about 3,500 kms in 2011 so it's not like I'm on the road a lot.
