We can't fully appreciate the bridge until the people of Sunnyside take their heads out of their butts and move the damn pedestrian crossing on Memorial!
Now that, I can agree on about a grievance. What a completely useless traffic light crossing which could easily be solved with a small bridge or tunnel.
While we're at it, who designed the center medians on the road and decided to intersect the concrete with mini rock gardens every 20 feet? Absolutely atrocious and awful looking.

Knowing the Sun, they'll probably show up to shoot pictures for their story that's already been written as we speak, about how no one is using the bridge, only to find it filled with people; Leading to one of their staffers screaming there's a bomb on the bridge and taking a picture after everyone clears off.

I think all the Sun would have to do is just drop one of their papers on the bridge, most people know to stay well clear of that rag.
Couple shots from this afternoon to add to the thread, nothing new or great just wanted to take some pics. Calgary Peace Bridge - 01 by apeddle1982, on Flickr
Won't be long. Maybe we can hand out paint brushes and cans of white paint on Saturday. Or perhaps we can have the commuters put in sweat equity as a toll.
I'm not a fan of the Water Centre. You want to talk about waste of tax dollars? This place has it in spades. I would even bet that it's not a LEED gold anymore. They had to re-do all the internal plumbing in the place shortly after opening because all the low flush systems they had weren't doing the job and the place smelt of feces.
The landscaping in the rear has been redone four times now because the mixture of native grasses they chose died several times. The latest configuration saw portions of the landscaping replaced with sod.
The front parking lot was paved with a porous asphalt and has since failed. The system filled up with silts and road gravel and doesn't operate as designed anymore.
They had major issues with birds nesting in the upper portion of the roof design and had to install some kind of baffle system and some predatory bird noises when the doors open. The pigeons liked nesting in the baffles more.
I would love to see a report of all the costs incurred in that building since it's grand opening. You could probably build another peace bridge or even two.
What's sad is that the lack of sound research that goes into the choices the city chooses to make with tax dollars. I work in engineering and I don't understand how you can pick grasses that you don't know with thrive, incorrect asphalt, and defficient facility plumbing. If that stuff happens in my field of work people are getting fired and lawsuits filed.
I can hardly wait tontake my 60 something year old mother who pays a ridiculous amount of property tax across this bridge and explain how much she paid for it.
I anticipate it will be highly entertaining, even more so if some hippies are around.

I think it is just interesting in looking at some data. 25m for a pedestrian bridge is wasting money but 100m for rec centres that if the numbers are correct could have less daily users then the bridge is justifiable. Just for the record I support both.
The issue isn't that 5000 people will use it per day. The issue is that 5000 people would have used a 3,000,000.00 dollar bridge just the same as this one.

You're going to explain that she paid ~$6.86 for it?

We've been over this a hundred times, please explain to us how you can build a bridge that spans 130 meters without having supports in the river and can meet the Transport Canada height requirements for that cheap.
