60th Birthday Party Ideas
Hey CP...I'm looking for some creative help. My old man is turning 60 this summer and my sisters and I have hit a wall trying to come up with ideas as to how to celebrate. One of the ideas we had was to have a 60's theme party, another was to have it catered by a company that does somked/barbecued food.
Has anyone here done/hosted anything like this? Please, any helpful ideas are welcome, we just want to make sure the old man has a great time!

Go with the more sophisticated combo of liquor and whores.

At that age, experiences are probably more important than physical gifts.
What does he like to do?
A salmon fishing expedition in BC? Going expedition somewhere? Etc, etc.
I'm going to take all my suits and burn them in a bonfire in the field when I turn that age.

Let's see. If he is turning 60 this summer, he was born in '52 and would put his "glory years" of the late teens, early 20s into the 1970s era so a "60s" party might be a bit off the mark (as a guess).
So perhaps holding a 70s theme party for him might be more realistic. Just a thought.
As for food, in lieu of presents you might consider a potluck festival of some sort.
Might leave you a few bucks to bring in some old fart like myself to DJ the event!

Let me try and help. My old man is a young 71 (most people peg him for late 50's early 60's), and I asked him what the ideal 60th would have been if I could throw an awesome party for him. He said "A weekend of fishing, golfing, and camping with my son would be the greatest gift I could ask for. I am not close enough with my family or friends, for them to have to be intimately involved anymore. But I see you all the time, and value every minute we get. As my only son, in a strange way, I now look up to you as an influence in my life, as much as that may shock you."
Yeah.... that really choked me up.

golf is perfect if he is in to that. A close and personal setting for 4 hours. I went and visited my dad not long ago on his 70th birthday. He golfs about 5 times a week and lives on VCR island. But another fellow on his course just lost his son to Cancer. He was 28 and from what I heard a great kid. The guy said something to my Dad about how lucky he (my dad)was to spend his birthday golfing with his son. Choked us both up, and really, the guy was right. Also had a party that night. Them 70 year olds can sure pound back the liquor some times.
So, yeah, golf.

So, another vote for hookers and blow, it is. Or, maybe just a good old fashioned key party.

A nice party takes a fair amount of time and planning. You could rent a room at a hotel, and send out invitations to family and friends. Because it's summer in Calgary, you could go with a western theme, and have them dress western. You could serve a punch, spiked or otherwise, depending on the guests.
You may want to put together a video which depicts certain important events in his life, with the music of the era in the background. I have found that something like this can be most meaningful. Also, speeches and toasts from some of his closest friends may add a lot, provided he isn't roasted too badly.
I'd discourage presents, however, you may wish to send him on a trip to somewhere he's always wanted to go, and the guests can contribute to it if they like.
I have found that the success of such a party is directly proportional to the amount of time and effort you put into making it happen. As long as people know what they are supposed to do, everything usually falls into place.
Hope this helps.

Re-enact some of their favorite movies
A fun game of carosal is not only enjoyable but good for the economy
Or re-doing the Euthenasia Day scene from the original death race and doing it like its meant to be

When my dad turned 60 two years ago, my brothers and I pitched in and surprised him with a trip for the four of us (him, my brothers and I) to go back to his hometown in Nova Scotia. He absolutely loved it. He showed us all around the town, showed us his elementary school, the house he grew up in, and we drank in all the bars he used to hang out in. We spent an afternoon in the cemetery and found tons of old relatives back to my great x 7 grandfather (my dad is very interested in our family history). He loved sharing his life with us and we learned so much, and loved seeing where he came from. It was a great experience and I think it's safe to say that we all made memories that we'll remember for the rest of our lives. I'd say an experience like that (not necessarily a trip, just serious quality time) could be more meaningful than a party (though I don't know you or your father at all so really I could be completely wrong. Totally depends on the person).
Good luck with whatever you decide on! I'd guess it's safe to say that he'll appreciate and enjoy whatever it is you come up with

My Dad turned 60 last year. We did a boys trip. Him and his brother and me and my brother and went to the Daytona 500 for a week. He is a big race fan and we had just a great time.
