Yah, it happens to me all the time when I first start downloading a file. After a few hours, I usually don't get those messages. Or once it finds lots of sources.

They at first send you email warnings saying you are using to much bandwidth and to stop it. After that they restrict your bandwidth. It's so slow but i'm going to going to Telus next week.
|
That's hilarious, what a bunch of peons. I have been downloading alot lately, I suppose I should ease up.
Although I figure you have to be a pretty high downloader for a while before they catch on.
hehe. I'm still trying to figure out what is considered "high downloading" They don't have any guidelines, and technically they aren't allowed to restrict your bandwidth, even though they do anyways.
Hey did anyone download shrek 2? it's pretty good quality.

Hey i think Shaw zapped me. Since i'm cancelling them and going to Telus i've uploaded more than 1500gigs in the past 3 weeks. hehehe.
|
You could go Shaw Extreme. It's 10 bucks a month more and they are not monitoring down/uploads.
|
Do you if thats going to change? For an extra $10 thats not bad. Can you tell the difference with the Extreme?
I did some network speed tests before and after switching to Extreme and there was a difference. Not that huge a speed boost, but if you're going to dl 100 gigs in a month and upload another 10 or more it saves you from getting nasty e-mails from shaw.

so my sopranos got to 90% and just stopped. The dl'ing just vanished, now when I do the search I can't find it on Suprnova. Do Torrents come and go in terms of availability? I was under the impression that constant availability was an advantage over other P2P Programs? Is it normal for things to come and go?
Sorry for all the questions.

Torrents files point to a tracker which hosts the information about the torrent. Trackers usually don't keep torrents around forever as they use system resources. Sites like suprnova don't have their own tracker; people post torrents from other sites' trackers.
Anyway, if the tracker has removed the torrent you won't be able to get it from there anymore. If you can find another site with the same file(s), then you can resume it from there.
Torrents are only available as long as a tracker makes it available, and as long as people are seeding the file.
My download speed increased from 300KB/s to 650KB/s when I went to I-Extreme

Torrent speeds are dependant on how many people are in the swarm and how many seeders there are.
If there's only a few seeders and lots of leechers, then you might not get good speeds.

How do you play with your firewall settings our whatever? I have no idea, but I am getting very slow transfer rates using messenger as well as some Bit Torrent files. What can I do to speed things up?

BitTorrent will work with outgoing ports only, meaning that it will work without doing anything to your firewall configuration.. but you will get better speeds if you forward the proper ports on your firewall so incoming connections will be accepted.
BitTorrent uses ports 6881-6999 by default. So simply configure your firewall to forward TCP ports 6881-6999 to your PC's local IP address (usually a 192.168.x.x type IP).
Some ISP's throttle those ports or use QoS (quality of service) to reduce the priority of traffic on those ports and that can affect torrent speeds as well. To get around that you need a client that you can configure the ports on (Azerus, ABC, or whatever). You can then set the port range to something other than 6881-6999 (10881 - 10999 or something, remember to set your firewall to the same port range).
The speed of a torrent depends on the upload speed of the seeders, so not all torrents are going to be fast (or even completable for that matter).
EDIT: One other thing that can happen is if the torrent is downloading slow but uploading fast (ie uploading as fast as your connection can handle), that can cause speeds to go down as well. Set your upload maximum speed in the torrent client to about 85% of your maximum theoretical upload speed.

OK, the problem is I have no idea how to do that? I've poked around but don't really know where to start?

I'm assuming you and Claeren have routers. Unfortunately every router is different as far as the interface so you'll probably have to check your router's manual. If you don't have the manual handy, there's usually a PDF version at the router maker's website.
I've got a Linksys, and when I go into the administration screen (by pointing my browser at http://192.168.1.1) there's an Applications and Gaming link, and in there it has a place to put in Port ranges. I put in 6881 in the start and 6999 at the end, choose TCP as the protocol, and enter in the IP address to forward them to (whatever IP your computer has).
The manual for your router should have a detailed description on how to forward ports. Post if you can't get it to go.

Suprnova is an RIAA monitored hellhole full of users who upload next to nothing, and hop off the second their file is done.
I use a private forum where, for the most part, users have respect for others. Downloading Sky Captain now
