Booo... that was Ray Ferraro trying to sound smart. He tried to put the puck through the skates of Brent Burns... Tanguay and Iginla try moves like that multiple times per game, and NHLers make that same move work plenty of times... Sven tried, Burns stopped... I think its silly to suggest that was some rookie mistake, its not like he thwarted an odd-man rush or something, he was trying to create an odd-man situation.
Furthermore, Burns committed to the puck on the play (as opposed to the body) which is exactly what Sven wanted... if Burns is a second late in getting his skate turned, that a quality scoring chance for the Flames... low risk, high reward in my book.
It wasn't just that play. I noticed a few times when he tried to beat d-men with stickhandling and lost the puck. Which is understandable - he's never played against NHL quality defencemen before.
C'mon people. Even Sidney Crosby took a season to get up to speed on the NHL game.

As long as he isn't the last man back I don't mind that he tries this. If he is moving up the ice with a full head of steam and tries this move, the opposing d-men will start backing in on the following attempts and this will help create room throughout the game. Lee Stempniak made Duncan Keith look like a junior d-men. It doesn't work all the time but it doesn't mean attempting it is useless.

Sven actually tried the same move in Minny and beat the defender and got a good scoring chance out of it.

I can't believe that kid, trying moves he uses to average about 2 points per game. Why the hell wasn't he working on his defensive game! Someone better sit him down and tell him what we usually expect from rookies.

Should also be noted that Sutter had him out there in the final moments of a crucial 2-2 game. Also had him out in the last couple minutes of OT, that right there says a lot about Sven's play.

Neither do I.
Just pointing out that - like all rookies before him - it's apparent that he's finding out moves that work on 17-year-old juniors don't work on 29-year-old pros.
I was asked to provide an honest appraisal of his play. And an honest appraisal of anyone's play is going to include some positives and some negatives.

Have to think it could be his last..“@RogMillions: Baertschi in for game vs Phx. None of the forwards will be ready by thursday. #Flames”

More good news for Baertschi, but also bad news for all the injured...

I can't help but think that with all the rumblings of Stempniak et al returning that he is healthy and very close to returning. With Sven on the team however, the trainers have been afforded some extra days to get them 100% and re-conditioned.
Team was hoping he'd be solid and not look too out of place.
They are seemingly very impressed that he's gotten on the scoresheet and been a factor in every game he's played.

That's not entirely true. He made a nice move against a Wild defender and it worked.

Yet he was glued to the bench when we actually had the LEAD.
That is what really irks me about Brent Sutter, Why must he change his mindset when we have a lead!!. Nonetheless I was happy to see Brent utilize Sven heavily in the final frame as he absolutely deserved that opportunity.

Was that not the same play that the failed deke attempt would catch Burns out of position and result in Sven getting possession of the puck just prior to him scoring the tying goal? or was that a different play?

That is a great point and I agree. Its a big part of our inability to maintain a lead. The players collapse in a 4-man box in front of the next. All aggression is lost. And the players that got us the lead see their ice time go down and we take the foot off the gas.
