Good point, we are in a do or die situation right now, perhaps my excitement about Baerstchi put things out of perspective. Winning games should be paramount, although I do hope we give Sven a shift on the pp before he goes back to Portland.
I'm bottling it up waiting to let it explode next year!
Does he have a legitimate shot at the calder next year? I know guys like Granlund, Yakupov, Kuznetsov are probably be the front runners but would it ever be great to have someone in the conversation!
The most impressive thing about Sven is how he always seems to be at least two stick-lengths away from any defender while still being involved in the play. His ability to recognize where he needs to be to make things happen, combined with his handspeed, leads me to think we've got a Swiss Eberle on our hands.
I do wonder what happens if we run into injuries again and make it into the post-season; can Sven be recalled only after Portland is done for the year?

Who knows how Yakupov will do after a concussion and a knee injury; he may not have the easiest time adjusting to the NHL, it's not like he has a 220 lb frame to take on NHL defenders. Kuznetsov may not even come over, and even if he does, I can see him becoming another Semin. Which may work in Washington, but who knows.
Sven should be a dark horse Calder threat now; after 20 games, hopefully he establishes himself as a nominee at the very least.

I could see Sven as a serious Calder consideration next year.
Certainly some strong games here (I get it, not mind-blowing... but strong), his incredible play in Portland and a good pre-season will have some media buzz surrounding him for sure.
Either way, we should see a lot of him. Which, as an Eastern Canada Flames fan, will be a nice relief. A fun kid to watch, potentially Calder worthy playing on a Canadian team and as media friendly as he is? He'll be getting a lot of facetime.
A more important question: With Smith locked in with #27, will Sven stick with 47 when he makes the club full time next year? I don't wanna get the jersey and then have him switch it up.

I hope so.
I think Backlund would have kept #60 if Sutter wasn't involved. Cammalleri wearing #93 shows that this management group isn't hung up on traditional numbers.
So who knows if Baertschi likes #47. I do, looks pretty sick on the ice. As you mentioned, #27 is taken, and so is #15 (his Swiss #).
I can't help but laugh at the people determined to slot Sven in the top 6. The only reason the Flames have had success the last 5 or 6 games has been the great play from the top 6 forwards. Why would you break that apart in the middle of a winning streak in the most important stretch of the season?
As for Baertschi's development, the timing of the call-up couldn't get any better. Rather than playing games at the start of the season and getting sent back down (like Scheifele for example), he gets called up near the end of the season, when he's playing his best hockey and gets a taste of the NHL playoff race. Great experience for the kid.

Just out of curiosity, but if Sven keeps scoring goals, is it possible to keep him up over the AHL'ers, or would he be the first one sent back because of the emergency call up?
I'm not debating about if he should be or not, just wondering if he's as good as gone once someone comes back.

He can be kept up so long as there are 3 or more emergency recall players on the team including him. Since the flames had four such players on the team, one can be sent down to the AHL after which sven would be sent down, and then the rest of the emergency recalls. We haven't had our obligatory injury yet this game though, so who knows how long it will be before a net total of 2 players (including Comeau) are back.

How does the emergency recall rule work in terms of managing Baertschi's GP?
If it turned out that enough F's were injured that Baertschi got to the 9 GP mark, would CAL be able to send him down and recall someone else on emergency recall to save an ELC year, or would they have to dress him and burn his first ELC year?
