I recommend that everyone watch (the terrible) Night of the Living Dead or the not as terrible remake version (better ending IMO) before the season finale.
If the doctor whispered to Rick that people will still turn even after suffering a natural (not walker related) death, wouldn't Rick have known that Shane was going to come back? Was it that he was just too distressed to remember to destroy Shane's brain? Makes me question whether or not the virus is airborne. Great episode.
It wasn't just Shane though, Randal became a walker after having his neck broke by Shane. I think everyone may be a carrier, once you die you become a walker.
I just can't get over how come we never see dogs or cats, every farm has both usually. And there's never any crows or magpies...it should be a feast for them. All that road kill laying....and walking around.

I thought they had established in the first season that everyone is already infected, and that so long as you're dead and you're brain is in tact that you will become a zombie regardless. Hence the guy who hung himself becoming a zombie. Getting bit just meant you would die sooner from a vicious infection caused by the bite.
Or am I just making stuff up from other zombie flicks I've seen? My girlfriend and I went on quite the zombie flick binge after Season 1 lol.
I said this back in November. I have no idea where this came from. I could have sworn it came from the show. But maybe I read it somewhere as a spoiler? Has this been established in the comic book? But it's totally in line with what's going on right now.
Or maybe... just maybe... I have the power of premonition...??
I for one would like to thank AMC for continuing to put out simply amazing series. I cannot express just how amazing this television show is. Simply a shame to think that some people will miss this masterpiece assuming it's just another gore filled, story vacant zombie flick, not that there is anything wrong with those either.
I didn't think they would be able to top the last episode's ending but this one was beyond amazing.
Oh and based on what we've seen so far throughout the series, it's a safe bet that everyone is already infected and will turn into a walker upon death assuming no major brain trauma.

Shane seemed more aware of his situation during that last scene. He had realized he could no longer live with what was going on, he had lost almost everything that he had before and was all but asking Rick to kill him. Incredible scene. Incredible show and Zachary Levi from Chuck is on the talking dead tonight!!!
Maybe this has been discussed earlier, but I've tried to stay out out this thread as much as possible to stay away from comic book spoilers, but something came to mind after tonights' awesome ending.
If everyone is already infected and without a head shot turn into a zombie when they die, how come the two guys Rick shot in the bar didn't attack them?
Is it just a matter of different people having the virus kick in at different times? Or was it something the writers missed?

I recall that Rick had shot both of them in the head.
I still don't know if I can believe that it is airborne at this point. Like "Dang" pointed out, I think Shane cutting himself with the knife that he used to kill walkers when he was in the bus might have been the cause behind his infection, and then I guess maybe he somehow spread it to Randal, who had open cuts on his wrists from the handcuffs.
However, if it is airborne, and everyone is a carrier for it, it could get interesting if Lori ends up having a walker baby (assuming she even survives the upcoming attack)
It seems obvious now that everyone is carrying a dormant version of the virus, that becomes active after the host dies. This would also explain why a bite from a zombie is lethal; the individual is infected with an activated form of the virus.
It is also clear that the activated form of the virus is transmitted via the blood stream since people are constantly splattered with zombie goo and don't become infected (despite the fact people are constantly walking around with open wounds). It's obviously not transferred orally, and doesn't have the ability to permeate through external or internal epithelial tissues, but can pass through the blood/brain barrier to target the brain.
I'm trying to remember if we saw any dead non-walkers in the show, besides the two officers/guards from a few episodes back. I can't recall any. It is also interesting that once the host is dead, the virus takes hold at different rates. Perhaps the longer the dormant version exists within the host, the faster it takes over once the host dies.
Anyway, that's what makes most sense to me.

I've stopped trying to think about why Randall and Shane became infected. I don't think it's the whole scenario where Shane cuts himself with his knife. That just seems too minor of an incident.
Next week looks nuts! From the sneak peaks it looks like a lot of the group gets split up and have to fend for themselves. I can't wait to see what happens. I can see alot of the more minor characters getting killed off next episode (i.e., Hershel, his suicidal daughter, Jimmy, Patricia, T-Dog, Andrea, and Carol). I think once the season is over, the third season will enter with Rick, Lori, Carl, Darryl, Glen, and Maggie. I can't see many of the characters surviving what looked like a massive horde of walkers.
In response to all the talk about infection... I think at this point it's clear that everyone is already infected, and the virus takes over when your body is dead and unable to stave it off.
Someone said earlier the show is still slow... What????? The last three episodes have been anything but show. I have no idea what one is expecting if you think it's slow.
