After my aunts husband was convicted of murdering her, but before he was sentenced, he was allowed to stand outside the courthouse on his own for a smoke during a recess for some reason. One of my uncles took the opportunity to beat the ever loving hell out of him. My uncle broke his hand breaking his sister's murderer's ribs.
When my uncle pleaded guilty to assault, the judge fined him $1000, and said he was doing that only because he was obligated to give him something. No jail time at all.

I remember several years ago, there was a case in Texas where the father of a child that was molested by his karate instructor killed the perp outside of the courthouse. When it went to trial, the judge gave the father 25 years probation or something like that.

If we're talking about the same case, the dad got 5 years probation.

I believe it is the same case, I just had the length of the sentence way off.
