Lung cancer was virtually non-existent in 1900.
http://www.lungcancersurgery.org/lun...er_history.htm
As Sam Donaldson once famously opined on network television in the late 1980's, signalling a harder shift in attitudes, paraphrased, "Its none of my business if you smoke, right up until that smoke reaches my nose. Then it IS my business."
Its not necessarily tobacco itself but rather the carcinogens that are added to give it appeal and flavour that make it truly dangerous through time to the smoker and everyone around.

I don't think it's a nuisance.
If you were walking outside and I cupped my hand behind me while I farted and put it up to your face... I'd wager my face would get re-arranged by your fist and I'd probably deserve it.
Same thing if I decided to belch after having a glorious onion-laden falafel and blew it in your face as you walked by. At least none of those fumes have been linked to cancer... that I know of.
So when someone is blowing barf-tastic cigarette fumes a few feet from a building front entrance, it's at best an incredibly rude thing to do. Brushing off something like that as just a 'nuisance' smacks to me of someone completely devoid of respect for others.

OP should be subjected to a few hours of Patty & Selma-like people blowing smoke in his face as punishment for this asinine thread.

Agreed with all points except on the cup-a-farts. Cup-a-farts are funny 100% of the time.

That's because most people died before lung cancer could kill them in their 50s and 60s. Dementia and Alzheimers weren't issues in 1900 either.
Most people died before their 50th birthday in 1900, you were lucky to see 55 or 60. Now people live forever and therefore disease rates skyrocket.

I pretty much agree with this statement right here. Exposure to second hand smoke in public places are so miniscule now, you can't convince me that being publicy exposed will lead to lung cancer later on in your life. The type of exposures that are dangerous are all done privately (at home, in a car, etc).

As per Cowperson's link.. http://www.lungcancersurgery.org/lun...er_history.htm
Quote:
Cancer of the lung was nearly nonexistent in the early 1900's. By the middle of the 20th century, however, an epidemic became apparent throughout the U.S. and the rest of the world. This dramatic increase correlated with the widespread prevalence of cigarette smoking. The tobacco industry had largely multiplied its production immediately prior to WWI. The early part of the epidemic correlated with the typical 20 to 30-year lagging period between initiation of smoking and the actual tumor formation. Despite denial from the tobacco companies the correlation was conclusively established in 1950.
|
... therefore the facts are... as the number of smokers skyrocketed, so did the number of lung cancer cases...

Personally I think smoking is plain stupid, they make you stink, the costs are outrageous (in canada anyway) and plug up your lungs to make you feel like crap. But. My parents lived a long life as did their parents (one grandfather was 99 when he died) and all smoked since they were kids.
And if you think as most do that smoking take years off your life remember this thread when your in a nursing home, unable to walk on your own,you wear diapers like a baby, can't wipe your own ass and need your food pureed-ed...you might just wished that you smoked a few.
Put me in the minuscule group that thinks the risks of smoking and the ridiculous "second hand" smoke in open areas is overrated bull-sh*t.
|
Do you realize how stupid this sounds. It's not like smoking cuts you off as a healthy 65 year old. It speeds up the aging process. So instead being 90in a nursing home, you're going to be 65.
You've obviously never seen anyone die from lung cancer, it's horrible.

I do. As a matter of fact my grandmother died from second hand smoke from my grandfather.
My grandmother lives in a rural area in Malaysia that has no traffic, and low to zero polution. The back of her house borders the edge of the rainforest. The herbs and spices are available in the woods and she usually picks them herself, occasionally buying spices from the local market. Any meat is either grown on her land and slaughtered by her (she only eats chicken and fish), or occasionally bought at the local market. My grandmother is the last few true village mountain people.
However, she developed lung cancer and died from it. The first thing the doctor asked her when she was diagnosed was, "Are there any smokers in your household." My grandfather is the only one that smokes, and he is a heavy smoker.
So yes, I do know someone who has died from cancer directly as a result of second hand smoking.

Exactly. Lung cancer with COPD has got to be one of the worst deaths out there. It was a very poorly thought out post.

As someone who watched his Grandpa die a slow and painful death from lung cancer I also think that comment is ignorant.

If you want to start comparing academic credentials & work experience, you're going to get taken to the cleaners son. Nothing you have stated in this thread indicates a rational conclusion based upon established medical evidence. I doubt you have the balls to propose your hypothesis to your lab primary investigator, or even the lowly lab tech for that matter.

By who exactly? I never claimed to be an expert. But when people call me out on not knowing anything about cancer or organic chemistry, I'm going to correct them.
I also don't work in a lab anymore. And yes I've had this discussion with many other people with a science background and they all agree with me. Funnily enough the closer someone's background gets to liberal arts, the less they seem to agree with me on the subject. Perfect example of politics taking over science.

I'm an insurance and personal injury lawyer. It's my job to challenge medical doctors on the issue of causation. Also, unless NuclearFart is an oncologist with a specific background in research relating to lung cancer, I don't see how his expertise is valid.

Well, I will say it, you have your head up your butt if you think second hand smoke doesn't cause cancer. And I am neither a doctor, or lawyer.
