Well if you're going for scenery then yes, UC is a better bet. If you're talking about things to do I'd go with motel village every time, assuming of course the alcove is still there.

Nope. Alcove/Savoury Lodge are shut down and fenced in. The city pulled the business license, iirc.

So unless you can find a cab you may find yourself sobering up and realizing that the 8 on your arm is actually a 3, which is good for everyone because you won't take them home.

You can gorge yourself on BBQ at that restaurant. Sorry Fleury, thought you mentioned bringing your boyfriend when in fact it just said bringing my friend.

And deep fried battered pickles. Definitely a point in motel village's favour.

We're taking about Big T's, Fleury. A pretty good BBQ restaurant in motel village that you'll become familiar with if you stay there.

Nick's isn't bad. Gotta respect Nick for sticking with the 70s decor 30 years after it went out of style. Not sure if they still do it, but their Sunday brunch used to include all-you-can-eat steaks.

Theres always Boston Pizza, but don't expect the type of service you'd get in Edmonton.

The Holiday Inn on Macleod Tr is a good bet as it's close to the 39th Ave station and you wouldn't have to transfer trains. It's also a pretty cheap cab ride from downtown/stampede grounds.

Motel Village is the next bet. A few hotels to choose from and super close to the Banff Trail train station. It's a little farther cab ride home, but not a big deal if you're only going to be doing it a couple times.

As suggested, try Priceline's "name your own price" feature. Try downtown Calgary, and shoot for $150, and see if you get it. If you don't, try again the next day at $155 and so on. Keep in mind if a hotel accepts your offer, you have to take it, and you are unable to cancel or even change the name on the reservation. If you're committed to going though, you can easily save some money doing it this way.

Banff trail ones would be good, also look for ones in the South by the C-train if you want to hit up Ranchmans, makes it an easier journey.

Booked my Banff hotel with Bumpers Inn, and in the process of the SAIT residences. Choice between the SAIT residences and "Canadas Best Value Inn" (which is $15 cheaper and offers a breakfast), but likely choosing the SAIT simply due to the better facilities (correct me if I'm wrong). Thanks everyone!
