Yesterday was my first nicotine free day, I've been chewing for about 10 years now. This will be the 3rd time I've quit, though it does feel different. The other 2 times were more the old I really SHOULD quit so I'll try, and it never lasts. This time I feel like I really WANT to quit and I've noticed it seems easier this time. Cravings weren't nearly as bad yesterday as I remember them being in the past. Also, valuable lesson learned from last time, it will not be ok to have a cigar or 2 after 6 months because I figure I'm quit now and it's just this once.

And I found that was the key to my success this go around. I was truly fed up with the habit, and enough was enough.

I was different. I don't think I truly ever wanted to quit. I mean, I still liked it. But I got sick Jan 28th 2011, and I always hated smoking while I was sick, and I ran out of smokes. I was really sick, too sick to go to the store down the street, so I just dealt with my high fever/flu and my cravings. It was the worst 3-4 day stretch that I ever dealed with. Once I got thru that, I dared myself to get thru another 3-4 day stretch and it snowballed.

Like I said, I don't think I truly wanted to quit, but circumstance put me in a positiont to do so and I was curious to see if I could. It's been one year and two weeks since I liast had a cigarette.

I'm still kicking ass in case you were wondering (you weren't). I do seem to have dreams where I'm smoking and then I wake up just pissed off to hell that I've failed.

For what it's worth, I was wondering - I'm always curious to know how my CP brethren is doing in the fight against nicotine! Keep up the great work!

As for the dreams, I actually had a doozie earlier this week. My level of anger (for having smoked) was only surpassed by the joy I felt when I realized it was just a dream.

It seems to go by quick, I don't even think of the time that I have quit unless someone bumps this thread. 1 week short of 3 months now.

I hit the 1 year mark as of today. After the first two weeks, it got really easy for me. Even got through a camping trip (where I would have normally smoked like a chimney) without a twitch last August.

Congrats gallione, you should be done for life.

Edit: I hadn't thought about it but a week ago Friday was my 9th anniversary.

I'm a (former) closet smoker. Really only been smoking for 4 years, but it has gotten to the point where I smoke whenever I'm alone, and sometimes avoid social situations to do so.

I know the Allan Carr book has been pushed a tonne and I was SUPER skeptical of it, thought it was a bunch of mumbo jumbo woo. I'd also consider myself a big skeptic in general (and of all things woo). But all he does is present a different (highly logical) view point on smoking. Its only 100 pages too.

just finishing off my last one, so just jumping into the frey. Realized as I am finishing it that I:

A) Have a huge headache
B) Have a shortness of breath
C) Rapid heart rate

But the logic of the book clicked instantly. Wish me luck!

I can't believe it's only been 2 months for me, it feels like it has been MUCH longer. I'm taking that as a good sign that time isn't dragging like it did the first couple of weeks. I'm at the point where most days I think about it once or twice instead of every hour. I had a dream that I fell off the wagon the other day, I was so pissed off at myself even though nothing really happened. I'll take that as a good sign as well.

On a related note my bank account sure appreciates not spending money on a tin of chew every day.

Hey, I haven't smoked since family day.

I mostly just got sick of smoking dictating so much in my life. Like the guy a few posts up who said he avoided social situations because of it, I can relate.
Also can relate to just pushing to see how far you can go. My lighter ran out, so I was using a bbq lighter, then that ran out just as my smokes(cigars in my case) ran out. I challenged myself to go a day and then another and then 3 and then 7 and then 14 etc, without smoking. Just coming up on the 8 week challenge and then it is 3 months and then 6, hopefully.

I found Swedish made snus at Macs store under the brand Swedish Match General.

It's $13 a tin there and about 15mg of nicotine per 0.5g portion. Snus is made of steamed tobacco bags (instead of fire cured and fermented like chewing tobacco) and you don't pyrolize it like when smoking so there are significantly to no harmful chemicals created as compared to when you light a cigarette. Sweden has the lowest rate of lung cancer in Europe supposedly due to the prevalance of snus usage instead of smoking but there really haven't been many scientific studies that aren't tainted by industry funding so I claim outright whether it's significantly healthier but it seems to be from what I'm reading.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snus

Might be an option to consider as a transition method away from cigarettes for those that don't like nicotine gum.

I stopped 6 years ago.

I was talking to someone on New Years about this "amazing" book that had helped my friend quit. I thought: "Pfft. Yeah. Right. A book is going to make me quit smoking"

Being a skeptic and having to work at the mall on New Years day, I bought the book on my break. Took my time reading it (3 days) and quit on January 5, 2006.

After smoking for almost 20 years and trying everything (patch, gum, cold turkey) this is what worked for me. I'm now in the best shape I've been in 15 years, ran a half marathon, did a sprint triathlon (and doing a second on Sunday), had a baby and am addicted to a new sport (setting a provincial record last month and going to compete at Nationals in June) I'm at the point now where I can't even remember the hold that nicotine had on me. I see people smoking and I shake my heads and think "Wow. That could be me if I hadn't read a simple book"

Thank you Allan Carr.

My final exams finish on Tuesday. I plan to cease smoking as of Wednesday. I will start reading Carr's book also. I hope it works this time, I can't even count how many times I've been a week to a month without smoking only to re-start.

Great posts every body reall inspriation in here.
