I would think that with a baby especially with the wounds and other factors that it would be pretty easy for the authorities to determine between vicious attack and attempted nuturing.
But I do agree that speculating really isn't all that appropriate or useful at this point.

Dog has been euthanized. Twitter from Metro Calgary.
Decision by the family.

Sad but necessary solution, IMHO. Hopefully it helps the family get some sort of closure on this.

Family is just looking for someone else to blame so they don't have to look in the mirror.

That's harsh.
Regardless of if it was neglectful or not, nobody wanted this to happen, dog included I am sure.

The key element is local authorities did not feel the need to order or advise them to kill the dog, implying they did not feel the dog was dangerous.
They simply made the choice. Tough to be in their shoes.

I get that.
I think what anyone critiquing these people for their decision need to do, is put themselves in the shoes of the parents of the child. And even if you think you can, you still probably can't.
What would you do? What would you want? Could you still look at that dog? Would you still want it around your house as a reminder? Do you dare take the chance this dog does something like this again if it is adopted out, and you had the chance to put it down?
It is not as easy as calling them idiots, or irresponsible, or horrible parents. This could have happened in the blink of an eye, and their lives are likely ruined because of this. So all the people empathizing with the dog, whether it lived or died, can have that solace. These people will suffer, longer than this dog would have lived, had it lived a full life, and then some. And I am sure that makes you all ecstatic.

To be clear, there was no chance the dog would have remained with the family. That option isn't part of the conversation.
They were irresponsible idiots. Factually, that's true.
Still, as I said above, it would be tough to be in their shoes. They simply couldn't live knowing the dog would be somewhere else, enjoying life. Dogs very much live in the moment.
That would be my read.

From a reliable source who works in the dog rescue field, they looked into it and:
Baby was left in room crying, dog was in kennel, dog got up from kennel and picked up baby to comfort it much like it would a puppy of its own.
I'd prefer they had surrendered the dog. But really, it was their dog, their kid was killed, their choice. Pretty hard to judge.
Sad for dog and kid today.

I'm not happy that they will suffer, but any sympathy I felt for them is definitely gone after having heard they put the dog down.

Maybe they were worried the dog would give the "mothering treatment" to another kid, as opposed to just not wanting the dog to enjoy life?

Good point.
I'm sure these people can sleep well now, knowing that the dog is dead. They really pulled a fast one, blaming this all on the dog. They are probably flying to Vegas right now to party it up.

To be honest, I bet there are people on here that ignorant, that is what they are thinking. How anyone can hold the parents more responsible than the animal, and have more sympathy for the dog that killed their kid, than the parents, shows a lack of maturity and real world sense.
Lets redo this scenario:
A full grown ######ed adult man who has no concept of right or wrong, picks your kid up out of a stroller, in a grocery store, and starts gnawing on the back of your baby's neck, and subsequently kills it. Are you going to feel sorry for him? Are you going to forgive him? Are you gonna go to the mental hospital and cuddle with him?
God some of you people must have Aspergers syndrome or something.

As I noted earlier, you could put any domesticated dog of any age in the world in that exact situation and the odds would be fairly decent even a different dog would have that same instinctual reaction.
Including the other dogs this couple owns as part of their sledding hobby.
The professionals observing the dog through the last week or so evidently know this as well given the family was not ordered to destroy the dog but rather were given the option to offer it life in another home or have it destroyed.
If the dog were deemed truly dangerous by the professionals, the choice wouldn't have been there.

Since you want to compare it to a different scenario, let's try one that more closely matches what happened.
Say a family has two children, aged 1 and 3. The parents leave them unattended for a few minutes. The three year old, who doesn't fully understand the consequences of his actions, pushes his little brother into the bathtub. The 1 year old drowns. Do you think the three year old should be put down?
