Now not unsurprisingly I’ve never owned a dog which I don’t doubt is at the root of my genuine bafflement of the general human dog relationship, but this thread has taken it to another level.

ANYONE suggesting that this dog should be anywhere but in the ground really needs to look at their priorities. This thing KILLED a human infant, the roots behind its actions do not matter at all. If suppose a very mentally deranged person who was incapable of understanding their actions killed a child would it be morally right to put them back in an environment where they are in a position to commit the same action again? Compound this with the long list of other much more deserving dogs who are in shelters right now and this whole debate becomes an total farce.

The fact this thing is still alive sickens me. The fact that people actually want it to be is mind numbing.
Agree completely and I have always had a dog. Anyone taking this dog would be bankrupted if it ever bit or attacked anyone else.

Agreed on all points here...especially the bold.

Dog killed a kid. Dog should die. I'm an animal lover myself (1 cat, had a dog in the past), but if an animal attacks (let alone kills) any member of my family...it's going to die.

And by attack I mean in a fashion that could be seen as a full on attack to kill. Just want to clear that up.

Have any prospective owner take an IQ test and prove they're more intelligent than a bowling pin and I'm sure they won't have a problem. As has been said, this dog isn't any more deserving of being adopted than any other dog, but it's absolutely no more deserving of death.

That's the thing though, it doesn't sound like it attacked anyone. It was an accident by the sounds of it.

I'm on the fence. On one hand the dog did nothing wrong(for a dog). On the other hand it killed a baby. If the dog showed even a tiny bit of aggression, absolutely put it down.

I guess I'm a little more harsh, or opinionated...whatever. Accident or not, I say put it down. You don't bite the hand that feeds.

It's been speculated that the dog was trying to comfort the baby. We're going to put a dog to death for trying to comfort a baby? Ridiculous. A dog that powerful should have been nowhere near that child. If I was a parent of a young child I would probably want this dog put down too, but my opinion would be completely swayed by my emotions and I'd be wrong.

Speculation or not, it killed a baby. A baby. IT KILLED A BABY. I can appreciate people saying that the dog didn't know any better or it was comforting the baby or whatever...but it still killed a human being.

Ok, I'm done here. I don't understand why people can't see this situation for what it is. I'm just going to stick to reading the thread now, rather than getting into it with people. I knew I shouldn't have opened the thread.

Cheers.

So lets kill it. That'll teach it and all those other dogs out there busy at work perfecting their plans to kill their owners babies a lesson.

What are the odds of being molested, beaten, or killed by your father? Having a father in your house is irresponsible

Trying to find stats for Filicide - none as of yet.

Statistics according to the Family Watchdog website:
  • 1 of 5 girls and 1 of 6 boys will be molested before their 18th birthday.
  • 90% of all sexual assaults against children are committed by someone whom the victim knew.
  • The typical sexual predator will assault 117 times before being caught.
  • The re-arrest rate for convicted child molesters is 52%.
Statistics from the FBI, Crimes Against Children website
  • The FBI estimates each child has almost a 25% chance of being molested, with a sex offender living ‘in every square mile of the United States.’

I don't understand how killing the dog makes anything better? The baby is not coming back. Why must more death be bought?

I think of all opinions in the thread, that's the most ridiculous. This isn't a serial killer we're talking about here. Why trail the dog like it's on death row? Dogs and humans don't think and act the same.

Don't appreciate the jab at the end. If a dog was attacking a child of mine, or a girlfriend... whatever, I wouldn't stop for a second. It is pretty easy to tell the difference between a playing dog, and a mauling dog.
Ok.. sorry... when you said tackled in my minds eye I saw a a GSD jumping up on you, like they do (my dog jumps up on me all the time) and knocking you over.

Glad you didn't get seriously injured. That obviously must have been fairly traumatic for you.

I think what has surprised me the most about this thread is some of the ferocity and hate people feel towards this dog.

From the general tone of a lot of posts here, I've come to the conclusion that there are a lot of CP members who generally dislike, or at the minimum, have absolutely no use for a dog.

This surprised me. I grew up with dogs (german shepards) and our dogs have always been loved members of the family. When they have passed on, I've cried. When they were ill, I worried. When they were enjoying themselves, I laughed.

Right now I have a 20 month old Golden Retriever, and if anything happened to him I'd be devastated. My life is definitely fuller with my dog in my life.

Frankly I've met more dogs in my life that I've liked than humans that I've liked.

There's a separate thread discussing those kinds of people

Yes it certainly is..... a sad statement about humanity... where dogs are generally friendlier and more deserving of love, than most people

Generally, cruel dogs are created by cruel humans.

Many of Micheal Vick's dogs, bred and trained for killing, have been rehabilitated and a portion of those are living with families.

What people are having trouble with in this instance is this seems to have been an instinctual accident - where a human was present in the room by the way - versus a cruel act.

In our society, we've somehow gotten it into our heads that there is no value in putting to death human's guilty of the most profound acts of deliberate cruelty to other humans . . . . yet we'll devalue the life of this dog for what is essentially an accident of instinct . . . . where the dog was placed in that situation by the human responsible.

While I'm suspicious of the sled-dogging background in this household, this does not appear to be a dog trained to cruelty by a human.

I once had the mortifying experience of watching my two Golden Retrievers catch a gopher and, before I could do anything about it, they ripped its sorry, screaming ass in half right in front of me while using it for tug of war. Extreme, deliberate cruelty but also instinctual in that case. They were, in fact, in their 12 years of life on the prairie, expert, instinctual killers but gentle with humans.

The fact the owners haven't been ordered by authorities to terminate the dog, the normal course of events, is probably very telling . . . . it suggests they do not believe the dog is a future danger and that this incident was an accident.

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated" - Gandhi

I guess we'll see how great we are.
