It's pretty funny watching all the people trying to recreate the famous photo. It's even funnier watching the locals who barely slow down for the people taking their photos.

I'm guessing a few posters here have done this.

Does it have to do with the fact the crosswalk is a Zebra crossing - one where pedestrians actually have the right of way?

In the UK you can park facing either direction.

I opened it up, and what can only be considered a drunk driver plowed through the intersection. A motorcycle going the opposite way was going half of what the car was.

I bet. The odd time there is someone (obvious local) that is using the crosswalk to actually cross the street, but mostly it's just people hanging out/dodging traffic waiting for a lull to get their photo. That would be pretty frustrating as a motorist, not knowing if you should actually stop or not.

It's because it's the other side of the world, but still the northern hemisphere. If this was Australia, all the cars and people would be upside down.

What is probably not apparent from the picture is Abbey Road is a very heavily used route into central London with a ton of traffic flowing down it every day plus 4 bus routes, until some dozy tourist decides to stop everything to get his picture taken.

It seemed like a pretty busy route watching yesterday (Sunday afternoon in London)

watching now...approx 8:50am on Monday morning (in London), there's a steady stream of bumper to bumper traffic, plus regular people using the crosswalk as it's intended.

I think what I get a kick out of the most is how so many people use this as a normal crosswalk, but then so many people also treat it as an almost religious place/tourist location.

No matter how much I watch, I can't get used to watching cars drive on the left side of the road.

Hilarious! You can see some people waving and others generally being a traffic hazard mixed in with frustrated people who are just trying to cross the road.
