When you guys mention halos at night, what do you mean exactly? Knowing my awful luck with everything in life I will no doubt get them when I get surgery in a few years.

Anyone care to show me a picture of what you mean.

Edit: Is this what it is? (This is looking at a light at night)

Before:

After:

Because if that's the case I already get that and I never had surgery.

Yes, that's kind of what it's like, but for me, it was worse with contacts than now (after surgery), so much better (less noticable/not as bad) than your pic, almost unnoticable really.

Really, it's only apparent when I am looking directly at a unshaded light (pot light in ceiling, street lights, etc). The only time it is really a bother (minor), is when I am at a movie (or sometimes watching TV), and trying to read light colored text against a dark background (same kind of effect), it's kind of like the text has a shadow.

I have my first assessment at Gimble on Thursday afternoon. They make you watch a 30 min DVD that explains the 4 main surgical options, potential risks and side effects and provide a brief explanation of each procedure. I will be a good candidate for both prk and lasik. Basically, what I took from the video, was that PRK is safer but more painful in the recovery process. I am going to have surgery and I will do whichever one they recommend for me. I'll give some updates after I see them on Thursday.

BUMP

My girlfriend is considering lazzzer eye surgery, and we are wondering: did you go blind and that is why you can't update?

Anyone else with any recent experiences they'd like to share?

I am thinking about laser surgery for myself as well. What's the difference between LASIK and Gimble? Are they just two companies offering the same technology, or they are different technologies?

I recently got one of my eyes re-done. Still the best money I've ever spent.

LASIK is a type of surgery, Gimble is a surgeon.

If you are asking between LASIK Canada and Gimble, two companies, then there is a difference.

Gimble you are paying for name brand. Like BMW or Mercedes of laser eye surgery.

I got mine done by DeMong himself in 1999. LASIK Canada was just starting out then, and was $1000/eye and DeMong was $2000 I think.

The reason I paid the premium is the DeMong is an expert in his field. Arguably the best eye specialist not just in Calgary, but Canada as well.

So I said to myself, do I want to get my eyes done by a guy who has his reputation and practice riding on my eyes, or some guy with way less experience who has no real ties to the company?

Anyways, to me I paid the premium, and am totally happy. Yes, some people go the $500 route, and get the same results. However, I thought the support and process from DeMong was awesome, and totally worth the extra price. Especially if something went wrong.

I am sure tech has gotten way better since then, but something about the high volume low margin eye surgery market makes me weary.

i ended up going to Lasik MD in Calgary a couple of years ago after my sister-in-law went and gave high recommendations. got my eyes done by this guy

http://www.lasikmd.com/calgary/our-s...-michael-dorey

looked him up before the surgery and was assured after looking at his resume and having done over 10,000 procedures. was in and out of the operating area in 10 minutes, recovery was very quick, and i have zero regrets. money well spent

So I gathered that the likes of Lasik/Gimble/DeMong all perform pretty much the same procedures using the same technologies, just different doctors doing them, right?

Yes and no. Gimbel/Demong are more on top of the latest technology and use higher end equipment. ANyone that has a high prescription, lots of astigmatism or a lazy eye should use Gimbel and Demong. The numbers bear out to lower complication rates with those two over Lasik MD

Although my eye doctor gives me for a hard time for sleeping with my contacts in despite them being approved for it.
What contacts allow you to sleep in them? I have 2 week disposables and if I forget to take them out, I normally wake up in the middle of the night with my eyes burning and sealed shut with goo.

Depends on the brand of Lenses and the individual. Air Optix Night and Day and Purevision lenses are approved for 30 days of continuous wear (ie. do not take them out all month). Biofinity, Air Optix and Oasys are approved for 6 days of continuous wear. All other brands are not approved or not safe for overnight wear.

Keep in mind though, that Overnight wear is not for everyone and a proper trial, with Optometrist supervision, should be conducted.

Posted in the ask an Optometrist page. These are the lenses that are good for overnight use. None of them (even online) are going to be $150 for a year supply, so I think he may not have a lens that can be slept in.

I had Gimble perform my operation (Lasik with crosslinking) two weeks ago. I had some inflammation that lasted a few days afterwards but otherwise it was great. I had a pretty high prescription which is why I didn't consider any of the $500 an eye options. Mine came in around $4200 for the procedure and I am quite happy with it so far.

This. x100. Seriously. I had mine done in August 2002. I had the Lasik surgery and it literally changed my life. It was a grad gift from my parents for finishing University. I was pretty young to get it done, but my prescription hadnt changed much and they were comfortable doing it.

It is easily one of the top 5 things I've ever done.

I used to get halos, but they've gone away. I can still read the microwave from 20' away and have no problem reading anything or far off distances. The only drawback for me is the dryness. I have allergies, but the surgery seemed to make it a bit worse.

I can see myself going back in 5-10 years to get them done again, but right now, all is good.

It isn't without risks. I spent a year of my life stumbling around in a legally blind state, and I almost needed a cornea transplant after severe corneal haze post-PRK. Fortunately, that dissipated over a span of years, but my eyesight is still somewhat worse than before surgery.

Go for the best surgeon you can, and ensure they have the most up-to-date equipment.

I just had Laser Eye surgery at LASIK MD (yesterday).

They give you 4 different types of eye drops which need to be taken every 2 hours.

I went in today to have my vision rechecked and they said I have 20/20 vision now.

The say I have over active red blood cells in my eye so they upped my presription of predafore.

I am happy with the results so far.

Can surgery repair a lazy eye?

Also what are the going rates for the Gimble / Demong's of the industry?
