There are some not so smart techs out there. My friend is an installer and he received a call from a colleague while we where having lunch. The colleague called because he couldn't figure out why the remote control wasn't working on the digital box. The unit wasn't turning on, he said that he had gone through 6 remote and 4 boxes without a change in the way it was working or rather wasn't working. He had been there for 2 and a half hours. I over-heard the conversation and asked has he checked the power outlet?

Sure enough the power bar was turned off. My reaction, wow. This guy makes $80,000+ a year...?

In your case Buzzard, exchanging the modem should be one of the things on the troubleshooting checklist, and should have been done on the first visit or even suggested by the TSR.

Yeah that first tech that came was.....well, I'll be nice and just say she wasn't very good. In all honesty I thought about mentioning the modem but thought it was too obvious and that if they thought it was part of the problem it would have been done. I'm not really in to telling people how to do their job. Oh well. Just happy I'm getting what I'm paying for now....which reminds me, I will be calling the billing department tomorrow to see what they can do about a discount for the lost month.

I was told by my Telus tech (seven years on the job - dedicated to his work) that there weren't enough nodes in the area to accommodate all the downloaders around me...that's why my "100mBit" service was netting me MAYBE 1 or 1.4 mB/sec...even though I was paying through the nose for faster bandwidth. Goodbye Shaw, hello Telus - and despite the grievances of the first round of Optic TV, it's just fine now! I have no regrets switching over.

I agree that your Telus tech was probably really confused, especially considering Telus does not offer 100 Mbit/s speeds.

edit: nm, realized you probably misspoke and your original problem was probably with Shaw.

I've been fine with BB50 since it's been installed at our place, I can get close to 50 down in non peak times but how the hell are you guys getting an upload anywhere close to 5?

Highest I've seen is 2.7 - 2.9

See above.
Ask ShawSean to look into it.

On a side note, there are many factors involved with troubleshooting poor speeds. Yes, congestion does happen from time to time but 95% of the time it's either older hardware, poor signal levels, software problems or faulty equipment.

Cheers,
Sean
Thanks Sean, I have some issues with my SMC moden/wireless router that came with the Broadband 50 plan, I'll PM you about it but my main frustration is that I am locked out of most of the configuration options for it. I can't even set my own DNS or SSID. They are all locked out based on the password I am given as a user and it seems only Shaw technicians have access to full administrative access. Would Shaw unlock that for me? Because otherwise it's useless and I've tossed it in the closet.

My download speeds are fine now but I'm like you still...upload maxes out at 2.9. Did you get yours increased at all yet?

PM'd you Sean.
