Labeaume says he is concerned because the budget is limited to $400 million.

Quebec City has until March 31 to decide whether the arena can be built within its budget.

The project hit a snag last week when it was estimated it would cost up to $40 million to have the proposed site of the arena decontaminated.

Labeaume wouldn't discuss speculation that a more realistic cost for the arena is about $550 million.

The Hornets are owned by the NBA and are still an option I would say.

A local population of 700+ is plenty to host a team. I agree, the NHL needs to wise up and stop trying to expand the game to other American markets like Seattle and Kansas City. Hamilton and Saskatchewan could use teams as well, you can't find Jets tickets-the MTS Centre is sold out every single night.

Yes, despite all their sellouts, they are 25th in league attendance. MTS Centre is small and will need to sell out to be a viable franchise.

and despite being 25th in attendance the Jets gate revenue is amongst the highest in the NHL. and they capped their season ticket waiting list at 8000. so we're good.

Time will tell when it isn't the shiny new toy. I was there when you couldn't give tickets away but I'm sure it is truly different this time.

I don't want to totally derail but the poster comparing Winnipeg's success to Regina/Saskatoon as a qualifier for a franchise just doesn't hold which sent me in this direction.

Of course it is a different era especially with the salary cap but imo, the Jets are a bubble team that have already peaked in terms of attendance, ticket pricing, gate receipts. You've maxed out and this is it unless you build a bigger arena and or discover some shale deposit. It is goldilocks: strong loonie and low unemployment.

Other hand, Winnipeg has a small population base, is a "have-not" province, a small corporate base, lower salaries than the other Canadian cities in the NHL.

And I know, these are same reasons naysayers said a team would never return but yet there is a team doing well.

What happens when things ebb when the economy goes down or the Jets have a few losing season? Will fans fork out that kind of cash when the average wage is closer to PEI than to Alberta? That will be telltale…to me anyway.
