They've been the best team in the WHL in the past couple of weeks and have rocketed up the standings and Sven has been a HUGE part of that. Can't wait to see him play on the Flames!

Unbelievable. He has 13 points in his last five games. How can you not excited about this kid. He seems to have the right attitude from everything I have read, and is literally dominating every opponent.

those are quite reassuring stats. the big question will now be whether the flames our able to develop him into a top 3/6 forward. unfortunately, recent and long term history suggest that he will stall out upon becoming a pro, but hopefully, he can be the catalyst to change that longstanding trend.

I think that mostly depends on who our coach is next year. I know Brent has had good success with young players in Red Deer and WJC's, but I worry he will make Bartschi earn his was up, starting him on the 4th line with grinders. Now don't get me wrong, every player should have to earn their ice-time, however there is still a proper way to develop your young guys with out forcing them to grind it out 1st.

Here are the highlights:

Also good week for flames prospect Michael Ferland as he is names the WHL player of the week due to a 4 goal and 1 assist performance.

I'm sorry but that's one of the things that irritate me. But great post, though, have to agree with you. Can't wait to see Sven light up Luongo like a Christmas tree.

I think he either makes the top 3 lines or goes down to Abbotsford. No point putting him on the 4th line.

Where's the Michael "Frackin" Ferland thread?
Or the Max "Power" Reinhart thread.
It just seems like we're seeing some really solid progression from the Flames more offensiely minded prospects, I don't think that the cupboard is all that bare anymore.

Speaking of cupboards...
Old Mother Hubbard
Went to the cupboard
To fetch her poor daughter a dress
But when she got there,
the cupboard was bare
and so was her daughter, I guess
...and now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

For the same team, and in the absence of Neiderreiter and Johannson, Baertschi has scored at an exceptionally improbable 2 point/game clip, and has a fairly even distribution of points at even strength and on the powerplay.
|
This is all true. In fact, Baertschi has the highest ratio of ES to PP points of the Flames junior prospects I'm tracking this year. He's currently at 48 ESP/29 PPP/3 SHP for a 62/38 split between even strength and power play.

That's nice and all, but the Hawks are up 8-1 late in the third, and Sven only has one assist and is a -1.
No biggie, just sayin.

Yup
With a win tonight, the Portland Winterhawks lead frogs to the top of the western conference and 1st overall in the WHL.

I believe in him but need to see him at a higher level to really believe.
The winterhawks are a team that scores more than any other team in the dub and by quite a bit. The next best in their conference is 35 back. That adds up to quite a few points to be had when your a top forward on the PP.
With 810 possible pts (hawks total goals x3) Sven has 81 granted it is misleading as not every goal has 3 pts given.

Did you exclude all the goals from when he was injured?
Also, did it occur to you that Bartschi is the biggest reason as to why the Winterhawks score so many goals? Kind of a weak argument on your part.

of your 810 possible points, two players combine for 183 points. That is sick.

Good quotes from flamesnation.ca on February 13th:
Quote:
[Baertschi's] split of even strength and powerplay scoring is strong (40/28 or 59% at ES) so fortunately we're not talking about a Rob Schremp situation. Baertschi also accounts for more than 44% of Portland's scoring when he's in the line-up, so it's safe to say he is a prime driver of results for the Winterhawks. For context, Greg Nemsiz never even crested 30% for the Spitfires in four seasons.
|
Quote:
The most compelling comparable for Flames fans is probably Claude Giroux. A 22nd overall pick by the Flyers, Giroux is a similar build to Baertschi (5'11" 175lbs when he was drafted) and also plays the wing. He scored at almost the exactly same rate as Baertschi in his 19-20 y/o season in the QMJHL and has since developed into a very nice hockey player.

The numbers show that he's:
1. The key cog that drives that offensive juggernaut
2. Not padding the stats with powerplay numbers
