The issue that I see is that when travelling you wouldn't always know what time to eat lunch. The first time I miss lunch because it is a cloudy day and I couldn't tell that it was high noon I will lose interest in the proposal and actively resist it.

That's interesting, I was wondering how things worked in China. The western part of the country must really have a difficult time with the whole timezone thing.
As for lunch, I don't eat lunch at noon, I eat lunch when I'm hungry. Problem solved.

What is wrong with you people? I skimmed the entire thread, and we're almost 50 posts in and nobody has mentioned Swatch Internet Time yet.
The idea has already been done, and in fact physical wristwatches were produced:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swatch_time
I knew a guy that was a huge proponent of Swatch time. Unfortunately, he was the only person I ever heard of adopting it, so he essentially lived in a time zone of one. I felt sorry for him and would occasionally refer to times in swatch time just to throw him a bone and make him feel better about his lifestyle choice.

The most confusing parts are the 1/2 hour time zones (e.g. Newfoundland) and the daylight saving time where most of the countries around the world DON'T USE!!

The Greeks would use it as an excuse to implement softer austerity measures, and demand that Germany give them a couple hundred billion to change all the business hours signs in the country.

We have timezones and daylight savings probably due to the needs of early 20th Century industries like farming and the railroads...needs which no longer exist today.
Maybe as the Global economy gets more synchronized there may be a reason for this...but I don't see it soon.
Plus the song 'Working 9-5' would become meaningless outside of Greenwich and I'm not in favour of that.

I don't know about this. Think of the mass chaos if this happened, especially with livestock.
I cannot imagine a farmer trying to explain to his cows that they now need to get up at 2 am. Cows are not that smart to begin with, and they have gotten used to time zones through successive generations of careful breeding. I picture the poor farmer out in the field, trying to explain to each individual cow that time zones no longer exist. Farmers would be doing that with all their time, and the economy would grind to a halt. Cows have a hard enough time with daylight savings time, and this would be a complete disaster. I for one am not willing to starve to death so that my TV programs come on at the same time as the east coast.
I am not sure you have thought this through completely, Girly.

I explained that cows have been bred for successive generations to understand time zones. It's one of the miracles of nature. But let's not get ridiculous: of course chickens don't know what time it is. They're chickens!
The problem is when the farmer goes out to feed the cows and says, "Hey cows, it's 2 am and time to eat!" The cows will be thinking "What? We don't eat at 2 am. How odd!" They will refuse to eat because of these crazy new rules.
The cows will inadvertently go on a hunger strike, and that will impact the quality of our milk, and therefore cheese. I don't want to live in a world of inferior cheeses.
It's also why Saskatchewan cows are around 14% more efficient than in other places: no daylight savings time. They are used to what time it is, and they are more happy as a result. Plunge those same cows into a world with no time zones, and chaos and disorder will prevail.
I'm sorry, I just can't support your proposal.

This might only have had a chance of working if it was the scheme adopted rather than timezones as they are now. There is no possibly way this could be implemented now, it wouldn't be worth the hassle. And even then, it doesn't seem like it would result in any net benefit over the current system. The worst would be trying to arrange conference calls that don't interfere with another cities lunch or quitting times. Time zones normalize a lot of these issues for us.
