Fair enough. "Ironic" isn't the best word to describe the timing, as it is clearly a deliberate response to this bill and his comments about it.

There was even a story on the Globe web site about the twitter account. Good way to raise awareness, for sure.

As an update, it seems the Tories are taking the bill back for reconsideration of the consequences.

It was my email to Harper - mine is the decisive Tory vote in SW Calgary.

I think it was the collective weight of their outlandish and outdated conservative button pushuer policies like 'Tough on Crime' and 'I fear technology'.

Talk about an easy way to get 18-26 year olds involved in the voting process: take away their torrents.

Cutting seniors benefits, stiffening penalties for drug possession and now interfering in the privacy of Canadians their internet habits.

Is this "How to lose an election 101"? Maybe they should extend the long gun registry and shut down the pacific salmon fisheries while they're at it. Maybe introduce another federal spending tax.

#TellVicEverything is currently trending on Twitter, encouraging everyone to share the minutiae of their lives with @ToewsVic since he's so keen to violate the privacy of ordinary law-abiding citizens. What a perfectly Canadian passive-aggressive protest.

This is what pisses me off about this whole thing. They are trying to frame this like it is about Child porn, when it is clearly not. I have been to the darkest, seediest, corners of the internet, and seen some truly horrible things. Never, ONCE, in all my 17 years or whatever it is, have I so much have seen anything remotely resembling what this bill is trying to prevent. I have never accidentally clicked on it once. I have accidentally clicked on a russian soldier having his head sawed off, I have accidentally clicked on a 'farm' site, but never child porn.

What they are trying to pretend this bill is about, is not something that is streamed or in public forums. If they pass this legislation, these guys will find a workaround anyway. Great, you are gonna monitor my connection? "I'll just snail mail my entire collection on a $15 16 GB thumb drive VIA UPS." Is what these guys will do anyway.

Just another way for big brother to keep tabs on you, and I do not like it one bit. And I say that as the dumbass that buys everything from iTunes.

Pretty standard response at this point. Old politicians + unfamiliarity with technology + trying something that theoretically is a public good without understanding the unintented consequences + protests = bills getting pulled back. C-30, SOPA, PIPA and ACTA are all meeting the same fate.

Exactly, I just hate that they call it 'reconsideration.'

All it means to me is that they tried to sneak something into law, failed, and are just going to wait to try again.

ACTA is a signed treaty. From my understanding, they've basically had most major nations sign it already and its final version from 2010 hasn't gone under major revision (if any).

They didn't try to sneak anything into law. This is the same process that is used for any bill brought before Parliament. The sponsoring Minister brings the Bill forward for presentation to the house where it goes through three readings with committee work between the readings. We should all be grateful that the public reaction to this proposed asnine legislation has been so swift and powerful before the it got further into the process. BTW goverments aren't in the habit of saying 'Ya, we f'ed up. Sorry, guess we're just dumb.'

Some countries (Netherlands, Bulgaria, Germany) are either withdrawing support or delaying signing, so there is a bit of movement on that front as well.

Now The Ottawa Citizen newspaper has tricked the person behind the anonymous [twitter] account into visiting a website that it controls, and have traced back the IP address used in the trap to the House of Commons, suggesting that Toews's nemesis works for the federal government. The Citizen claims that the IP address has also been used to "frequently" edit Wikipedia "[give] them what appears to be a pro-NDP bias" (the New Democratic Party is the left-leaning opposition party in Parliament).

And thanks to how the EU works, Poland's reversal effectively killed ratification for all member nations.

Yes they did. They tried to sneak anti-privacy/anti-piracy law through as an anti-child porn law.

The court information? Probably a matter of public record so either online on a website or going down to the courthouse and browsing through the records.
