NHLers, are not as far off as you think. There is a lot more income parity on the NHL however. Plus unlike the NFL contracts are guaranteed.

We aren't talking about pro money, or at least I wasn't. I was talking about leagues like the CHL and other amateur associations. I would bet similar football programs in Texas bring in more money than WHL, QMJHL and OHL combined.

I think a big part of it, is so many of these players come from such poor backgrounds, they are like a kid in a candy store when they land the contract. Plus a huge part of black culture is the bling. All that matters to so many of these guys is Bentleys and Jewellery. It is the mark of success in the thug/gangster culture.

No, sorry. That's completely wrong.
I'll agree with the rest, but black culture has nothing to do with "bling". Race has nothing to do with "bling" and lavish lifestyles. Money is one thing that mutually transcends race.

Fair enough. I misread it.
I still think the numbers are relevant to the thread anyway. I was shocked to see NFL at the bottom, being the gigantic cash machine it is.

But then again I'm not even talking about college, I'm talking about the 15-18 year olds in high school and how athletes are treated educational wise. I had a friend move to the states to play baseball, went to high school there, and because he was one of the better players they never gave him homework, they would walk him through the tests (basically cheating) just to make sure he could pass and play. Do you think that improved education or hurt him long run?
Where another friend who played in the CHL had very strict rules on his school work, curfews, etc. and it seemed important to the team that he did well because not every kid will make the NHL, where for other sports in the states all they focus on is trying to win the lottery in getting the big league contract.
Maybe not the biggest of examples but I have heard it over and over, even reported in the news, how better players get recruited and cheat their way through school so they can practive their jump shot or catching a ball. I'm actually suprised this would be news to anyone who follows sports.

Well that's obviously a large sample size and is of course a completely accurate and not at all flawed basis for coming to a conclusion.
Btw, remind me again as to the strict academic policies in place in the CHL. Obviously you have to maintain a certain GPA to eligible to play right? That's the case in high school athletics, it couldn't be that the WHL (for example) has an incredibly wishy washy standard that allows teams to dress players regardless of grades, could it?

NHL has a 45-53 man roster which will skew the numbers a bit. NFL there is also a bunch of players that make a ridiculous amount each season, while the rest make league min. Unlike the NHL where you have a more even playing field and less guys.

I kinda disagree.
And I do not fault the kids for it, it is a sad reality of the culture. They have horrible role models. "Get rich or die trying." Is the mantra of one of their top role models. Yes, it transcends race, but lets be honest. Being black and tall is a massive advantage in becoming an NBA player for mainly athletic reasons, so that is who you are seeing having these struggles. At a lot of them come from very troubled upbringings.
Ask any Canadian kid, from a middle class family why he wants to play in the NHL, and money almost never comes into the equation. You get answers like "So I can play with Jarome." or sadder instances like "So I can wear a Canucks jersey." When I was a kid, I dreamed of being an NHL player, so I could play in the Saddledome, impress the girl 2 doors down from me, and still live with my parents and play Atari all day. Albeit the money wasn't quite the same back then, I still assumed they lived in gold plated houses, and had private jets, because they were on TV.

As far as the players go, CHL players can actually earn money and have a really good scholarship program (so I've been lead to believe). College football may be the most profitable sports league in the US (easily the most popular), but they aren't allowed to pay their players, other than provide them with a free college education they likely don't care about.
I'd say overall, if you never go pro, you're much better off in the CHL than any US college sport.

I agree. The obvious exception would be someone that actually takes their school work seriously. I'd love to be able to play football for Stanford or hockey for Princeton/Harvard/Yale etc and be able to walk out of their with a degree.

So now we have 80% of NFLers are bankrupt after a few years of retirement and 65% of NBAers are bankrupt. Just out of curiosity, what is the stat for NHLers? Do they have anywhere near the level of bankruptcy that these other American leagues have?

I even said myself it wasn't a large sample size for personal experience but I have heard other stories but have nothing to back it up.
Can we just agree to disagree? It seems clear neither of us are going to back from our stance and neither of us has any proof to back anything up.

Why would the league care?
In fact making it into the league and living that lavish lifestyle is probably a perk to get players into the league

The NBA has a "Gangsta" image and if the Gangstas are in the minority is sure doesn't look that way. The NBA lost my attention once it got ridiculously annoying, however, here is a very serious investigation on Gangsta life in the NBA.

Why?
I've worked with plenty of guys over the years who have pissed lots of money away, it wasn't up to their employer to tell these guys how to spend (or not) their paycheck, and it's not up to the NBA either.

horse, water etc
incidently they do, most of the leagues have advisors that try to help the younger players avoid the pitfalls of sucess, but these kids have spent most of their lives doing very little but working on their sporting skills so they generally arn't the brightest bulbs on the christmas tree.
