Actually, I had an Iranian co-worker last year and he was fairly conservative yet he was an interesting person to talk to. He was trying to convince me on the merits of what Iran was doing, saying that this measure protects his family from the "filth" that is on the internet. To him, it's all about censoring sinful content and nothing to do with politics. The political ramifications didn't even register with him. It was shocking.

Special interests, namely big media, are trying to pass SOPA, PIPA and ACTA. They were hoping to use the ignorance of politicians to their advantage. More than one representative in the US came out and admitted they had no idea what they were supporting, only that "protecting American jobs" and "fighting piracy" sounded good.
