John 'Fricken' Gaudreau. One of the best players on his team and he is a freshman.

Looks like Bartschi has scored, 4 goals in 2 games now for him. Here's to hoping for a few more before the game is over!

He's number three in Freshmen scoring in the Hockey East.

yeah, and Wotherspoon assisted on the goal! Wotherspoon has taken quite a leap offensively - last year, he had 2+10 in 64 games. This year, he already has 7+16 in just 49 games.

Yep.

Also, the freshman (Scott Wilson) who leads H-East in scoring is a full year and four months older than Gaudreau. He is just slightly older than Bill Arnold.

The freshman in second (Ludwig Karlsson) is two years and seven months older than Gaudreau.

Safe to say Gaudreau has done well for himself thus far. There are some big kids on those college teams and he has handled himself well.

And he's still growing. Bill Arnold improved by leaps and bounds from when he joined Boston College last year to now. Similar things can happen for Gaudreau.

Some weird but positive news. There's a national teams break in the finnish league for the tournament in Sweden, and I guess team Finland's backup Ari Ahonen got sick so they're flying in Joni Ortio of all people.

Which is weird since the guy has only played two games. They have Pasi Nurminen (who is a coach and hasn't played in years) as the backup right now because Ortio hasn't been able to get there quick enough. It's great that Ortio is connected with the national team, but I don't understand how it happened. Maybe he'll be there just to warm the bench.

The whole situation with Ortio is weird. He's not good enough to even be the back up in Abbotsford but he's good enough to start in Finland's top league and now be on their national team?

He didn't play that badly when he got a chance with the Heat but he rarely got a chance. I'm wondering about our Heat coach.

To be fair, he's only played 2 games in Finland, so it's too early to say if he's really a starter yet. But it looks pretty good since his team's goaltending has been poor overall before him.

The national team thing is odd. It's nice that he's even on the minds of the national team's managers, but I can't imagine that they'd actually use him. He did play in the junior team last year of course. Maybe because he's young and hasn't played much this season, they figured he's a guy they can call on short notice to warm the bench.

It's really great that he's been able to jump right in. He can just continue building on that next season and become a proper starter for TPS.

I really appreciate Feaster picking Gaudreau. The last time we had a player like him was who? St. Louis?

He might not make it into the NHL because of his size, put a 4th round pick is hardly any risk to take for a player of his skill.

He improved a lot since the beginning of the season with the Heat, but wasn't quite reliable enough to be a starter there. However, he seems to have improved his game enough that management realized that they needed to find him some playing time to continue to improve beyond what he was taught in Abbotsford. He's getting that opportunity in Finland.

Quite frankly, I have been wondering about the Heat coach for a while now. He seems to really like certain players and not others without any concrete reason or at the very least with little thought. He seems to pigeon hole guys into what role he thinks they should have and doesn't waiver from that. I am have not been impressed with how he has been handling the Heat's latest losing streak. It is easy to be a good coach when a team is winning, but when they are losing a coach has to rise to the occasion. I am starting to wonder if he is "losing the room". Hopefully Captain Laing can help the group out when he returns.

I don't know. I'll respectfully disagree.

I think that Ward is following the meritocracy system laid out by the Flames organization to a tee.

I remember the Rheault-Walter-Kolanos line getting sat for a whole period and a half at a couple of points in time when they've been playing weak. Ward pulled Danny Taylor, when he was struggling a couple of weeks back, and didn't hesitate to do so even though Taylor was a beast. He's given Laing chances on the top lines to see if he can do something, and when he didn't, he dropped down to the 3rd line again.

Aliu has had tremendous work ethic at times and has been rewarded for it by being put on the 2nd and 3rd lines when he was destined for the 4th line. As Breen started to play better these last couple of months, he's been given more ice time plus PK minutes that he was deprived of in the beginning of the season.

I just see a meritocracy being followed. Perhaps Ortio could've gotten a few more starts, but if you've got a hot goalie, I don't think you take him out.

Sorry, I just can't think of any situations or circumstances in which Ward has played favouritism.

With that said though, I kind of agree with you about "losing the room". I don't think he's "losing the players," but I do think he might be "losing the room". What I mean by this is that the players still have trust in him and his abilities, but I think on the whole, he needs to do something with this team to get them out of their rut.

He had responded in a post-game interview (I believe in one of the last games against the Chicago Wolves) to a question about how he plans on getting out of their slump by saying something along the lines of "eventually we'll get out of it. We're not going to change anything. We just need to keep on with what we're doing and stay the course".

At the time, they weren't in as deep of a slump as they are now and I think that was smart of Ward to "stay the course". But now, they've gone 4-11-1 in the new year. That's unacceptable. I know alot of it has to do with callups and injuries, but wow.

It's time for Ward to do something, but I don't know if anyone has that answer, not even Ward.

EDIT - I stand corrected. In tonight's post-game interview Ward said he adjusted the systems yesterday in practice and despite the loss he believes they paid off, especially defensively because they only allowed 21 shots. He also said that he thinks they played a good game despite the loss. Maybe things will turn around soon.

Sven Bartschi with 1g, 2a = 3 points in a 7-2 win against Seattle
Wotherspoon with an assist as well

Bartschi now with 13 points in his last 6 games. Looks like he back!

Very interested in seeing how Ward does to finish the season and if he can get the team back on track. He has certainly shown a different approach at trying to motivate his players throughtout this season. The whole Howse situation, having guys sit out and not allowed in the building to watch the game. Very interesting approach in both those situations. Have to respect the guts and stones to try something like that, but at the same time it is definetly something that could backfire and get a team against you pretty quickly. Not saying that has happened, but at some point you wonder when tactics like those will have the reverse affect.

As for Ortio I didn't really like the handling of him. I really think he should have got more starts especially when Irving got the callup. I know goalies take a long time to develop and can appreciate that, however I just don't think he was given an opportunity to develop. Practising and working with Sigalet is good and all, but a goalie needs to get in game action. I just don't think the 3 or 4 starts in he got in half a season was really fair to him. Hopefully he gets a lot of game action in Finland and when he comes back over he can get an opportunity.
